Pep Guardiola will be free to join any club in the summer, and former Manchester United defender Gordon McQueen believes that the Red Devils should go all out to get the Spaniard in order to bring back the glory days.

Manchester United have been in very poor form of late, with manager Louis van Gaal and some of the players coming under a lot of criticism for their ‘boring’ style of play. There have been a lot of calls from the fans to sack Van Gaal and sign former FC Barcelona manager Guardiola.

Now it seems that the fans have a United legend supporting their opinion, with McQueen also saying that the Red Devils should sack Van Gaal if Guardiola is available.

“If Ed Woodward doesn’t try to persuade him to make United great again, then he isn’t doing his job properly,” McQueen was quoted saying by the Daily Mirror. “That’s the manager the majority of fans would want and I still believe United have the history, tradition and global presence to be attractive to Guardiola.

“The Van Gaal way just isn’t working for anyone and although I understand it’s in United’s thoughts to promote [Van Gaal No 2 and club legend] Ryan Giggs and give him a go, if Guardiola is available they owe it to the fans to have a conversation with him. For me, Guardiola has proved himself the best in the business,” said McQueen.

Manchester City favourites to land Pep

Although a number of clubs have been linked to the Spaniard, it is Manchester City who are rumoured to be the favourites to sign Guardiola. This could prove to be detrimental for City’s arch rival Manchester United, who are struggling to get into the top four spots. Also, the rumours about Argentina star Lionel Messi following Guardiola to Manchester City is something that all the Red Devils fans would be dreading.
