Speaking after the Ballon d’Or gala, Dani Alves claimed that he was surprised to see his Brazilian compatriot Neymar finish behind Cristiano Ronaldo, as Lionel Messi scooped the top prize for the fifth time in his career.

According to Marca, Cristiano Ronaldo and Dani Alves also exchanged heated words at the gala, with the rivalry between the duo taking a new turn following the ceremony held in Zurich.

Cristiano Ronaldo finished second with 27.76% of the votes and Neymar came third with a tally of 7.86%. Speaking after the gala, Dani Alves said he believes that it would be Neymar’s turn to win the award once Lionel Messi ‘stops winning’ the prized individual trophy.

Surprised to see Neymar not finish second

As reported by AS, Dani Alves took another shot at Cristiano Ronaldo as he expressed his surprise at the Portuguese international finishing ahead of Neymar in the final tally.

“Ya, it surprised me, but they cry when I say these things and speak my mind. When Leo stops winning it, it’ll be Neymar.”

Dani Alves believes that Lionel Messi has only gotten better with time and that the Argentine international will go on winning the award ‘as long as he wants to’.

Alves allegedly clashed with Ronaldo at the gala

Following the ceremony held in Zurich, Marca reported that Ronaldo and Dani Alves exchanged ‘heated’ comments in the build up to the final event. While the two have often clashed on the pitch, Alves has previously hit out against Ronaldo claiming that the Portuguese international played only for himself and not the team.

Speaking after Barcelona’s 4-0 win over Real Madrid this season, Alves claimed that it was only fitting for the media to blame Ronaldo for the loss as the superstar is usually the centre of attention every time his team wins.
