After a vote conducted by trade magazine Kicker, Kevin De Bruyne was named the Bundesliga’s Player of the Year, defeating the likes of Arjen Robben and Manuel Neuer in the vote.

Despite being the front-runner for most of the season, Kevin De Bruyne’s achievement is truly remarkable, considering the situation he found himself in, only 16 months previously.

After a vote between 183 professional footballers in the Bundesliga, The Wolfsburg midfielder collected 52.5% of votes ahead of the widely Dutch Arjen Robben (Bayern Munich) with 23.5% of votes and German Bellarbi Karim (Bayer Leverkusen, 6.6%).

Having to contend for a spot on Chelsea’s bench, De Bruyne was cut a more than frustrated figure. Claiming to have lost his happiness under Mourinho De Bruyne lit the Bundesliga alight, after his return to the German Championship.
Despite plying his trade with Werder Bremen, De Bruyne sealed a 30 Million Euro move to Deiter Hecking’s Wolfsburg. The purchase proved one of the most vital pieces of Business conducted by the Die Wölfe, since their Bundesliga title winning campaign back in 2008-09.

De Bruyne’s consistent performances, particularly those against bigger opposition, led the Saxony club to a second place League finish, and a DFB Pokal title. De Bruyne’s performances against Bayern in January and Dortmund in the Pokal final, were nothing short of a masterclass.

With the Belgian linked to many top clubs, particularly Manchester City, Wolfsburg will have to do their very best to hold on to their attacking protégé. With their second place finish, cup success and re-entry into the UEFA Champions League group stages, the Saxon club should have the financial power to fend off Europe’s elite, as they look forward to a return to the elite levels of European football.
