Raphael Varane returns, but Cristiano Ronaldo and Harry Maguire are on the bench as Manchester United prepare to take on Liverpool at Old Trafford.

Erik ten Hag has made four changes to the side that faced a 4-0 trouncing at the hands of Brentford in the previous gameweek as Manchester United get set to play hosts to Liverpool at Old Trafford. There are no shuffles in goal, where David de Gea starts ahead of Tom Heaton again.

The first changes come in the defensive unit, with Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw dropping to the bench. Raphael Varane replaces Maguire at the heart of the Manchester United defence against Liverpool, forming the central defensive partnership with Lisandro Martinez. Shaw makes way for Tyrell Malacia, with Diogo Dalot the other full-back.

Up ahead in midfield, Scott McTominay replaces Fred as the holding midfielder, with the incoming Casemiro likely to take the Scottish international’s place in the next game. Christian Eriksen and Bruno Fernandes retain their spots, with the latter donning the armband in Maguire’s absence.

The big news is that ten Hag has relegated Cristiano Ronaldo to the bench for the second time in three games. Anthony Elanga replaces Ronaldo in the starting eleven, with Marcus Rashford likely to spearhead the Manchester United attack against Liverpool, while Jadon Sancho completes the team. The fit-again Anthony Martial accompanies Ronaldo on the bench.

Manchester United Starting Lineup: de Gea, Dalot, Varane, Martinez, Malacia, Eriksen, McTominay, Bruno Fernandes, Elanga, Rashford, Sancho
