Antonio Rudiger starts in place of Thiago Silva while Mateo Kovacic features in midfield over Jorginho as Chelsea gear up to take on Newcastle United.

With the Premier League returning to action, Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has made just the one change to the starting XI that took the field against Sheffield United last time out, for the game against Newcastle United.

The change comes in the backline where Thiago Silva has been rested by the manager after his international exertions with Brazil. In his place, Antonio Rudiger, whose future at the club remains uncertain, steps into the heart of the Chelsea defence alongside Kurt Zouma.

Reece James and Ben Chilwell, who has recovered from a back problem he picked up while with England, continue as the full-backs, with Edouard Mendy manning the Blues’ goal against Newcastle.

There are no alterations in midfield, with N’Golo Kante continuing at the base of the midfield flanked by the duo of Mateo Kovacic and Mason Mount, leaving Jorginho on the bench once again. The front three of Hakim Ziyech, Tammy Abraham and Timo Werner also remains unchanged, with Olivier Giroud and Callum Hudson-Odoi on the bench.

Chelsea Confirmed XI: Mendy; James, Zouma, Rudiger, Chilwell; Kovacic, Kante, Mount; Ziyech, Abraham, Werner.
