Adam Lallana and Xherdan Shaqiri are surprise starters while Virgil van Dijk misses out due to illness ahead of Liverpool’s Club World Cup semi-final against Monterrey.

Jurgen Klopp has named a considerably weakened starting lineup as Liverpool get set to lock horns with CONCACAF Champions League holders Monterrey in the Club World Cup semi-final in Doha.

Alisson Becker keeps his place in goal, with Adrian being his deputy once again. The defence, however, sees a couple of regulars missing out. Trent Alexander-Arnold has been given a bit of a breather, while Virgil van Dijk is unavailable due to illness.

James Milner starts as the right-back in the absence of Alexander-Arnold while Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson has been deployed as a makeshift centre-back in place of van Dijk. Henderson has Joe Gomez as his central defensive partner, with Andrew Robertson starting as the left-back.

Up ahead in midfield, Adam Lallana starts, presumably as the holding midfielder. Lallana has Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain for company in the middle of the park. Liverpool’s attack sees Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino being benched, with Xherdan Shaqiri and Divock Origi staring in their stead. Mohamed Salah is the only regular forward starting upfront for Liverpool.

Liverpool Starting XI: Alisson; Milner, Gomez, Henderson, Robertson; Oxlade-Chamberlain, Lallana, Keita; Salah, Origi, Shaqiri
