Real Madrid ran out 3-0 winners over a tame Sevilla side in the first leg of the Copa del Rey round of 16 match, extending their unbeaten run to 38 games. Los Blancos rarely gave their opponents a glimmer of hope and dominated proceedings from the opening to the closing whistle.

Defender Raphael Varane scored the second goal on the day for Real Madrid, but it was the performance of James Rodriguez that caught the eye of the fans. Linked with a move to Chelsea, Rodriguez did not let any transfer speculation affect him as he made the most of Cristiano Ronaldo’s absence.

The Colombian showed manager Zinedine Zidane as to why he has been wrong in excluding him from the starting lineup as he bagged an impressive brace. Rodriguez opened the scoring in the 11th minute with an incisive finish and doubled his side’s advantage from the penalty spot.
