Leighton Baines struck a late penalty to earn Everton a hard-fought draw against Manchester United at Goodison Park on Sunday.

Manchester United were the commanding of the two sides in the first half that saw them control the tempo of the match beautifully. The Red Devils finally got a deserved lead in the 42nd minute as Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s lobbed effort over Maarten Stekelenburg hit the woodwork twice before the ball trickled across the line.

In the second half, Everton were the better side as they went in search of an equaliser, putting United under relentless pressure. They finally got their chance in the 88th minute as second half substitute Marouane Fellaini clipped Idrissa Gueye in the Manchester United box to concede a late penalty.

As the Belgian came under fire from a large section of Manchester United fans for affording Everton a lifeline with his howler, Leighton Baines duly converted from the spot to ensure that the spoils of the match were shared, and that United were left frustrated yet again.
