Brazil beat Germany 5-4 on penalties to win their first ever Olympic gold medal in football. Captain Neymar played the chief protagonist, scoring one goal in normal time and converting the decisive penalty.

Congratulations came pouring in from all corners, as a footballing nation which has enthralled millions over the years won their first Olympic gold medal at the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

The Selecao have fallen far from the pedestal these past few years, but the recent achievement will go a long way in helping them regain the confidence and flair that has defined the Brazilian national football team for years.

However the end of the match was marred with controversy, as 21-year-old German midfielder Robert Bauer showed seven fingers to the Brazilian fans as a reminder of their 7-1 defeat to Die Mannschaft in the 2014 World Cup.

The Ingolstadt player later apologized for his actions, but was roundly criticized by the fans.
