It was the same old story for Aizawl FC at the Barasat Stadium, as they played well, only to go down in the end to a much stornger side. However, coach Manuel Retamero feels that his side can do well in the I-League if they are consistent.

“We need to keep this level. Because I remember, we played very well against Mohun Bagan here, [against DSK Shivajians] we won our first match. But then against Sporting Clube de Goa, they won,” said Retamero. “You win, or you play well, but you need to keep the level [in every match]. I know, its very difficult.”

The Spaniard pointed out that although his side manages to create a lot of good chances, they are no clinical in front of goal, something that they need to do, in order to get more points on board and avoid relegation.

“It’s a problem for us. We played very well against a big team like East Bengal. We have very clear opportunities to scre the goal. I’m very proud of my players and my team, but we need to finish the opportunities that we have,” Retamero said.

“Maybe with other teams you can enjoy 10-12 opportunities, and score one or two. But with this team [East Bengal]  it s very difficult,” he continued. “We need to enjoy the opportunities that we have. We need to work, work work, and I have confidence that with time, we will have more points on board.”

Aizawl FC need points

The team from Mizoram might be three points clear of the drop zone right now, but they are nowhere near to attaining safety at the moment. With traditional giants Salgaocar and fellow newbies DSK Shivajians battling it out at the bottom, Retamero’s side have a good chance though, of making it out to the next season’s I-League.
