I-League Round-18: Preview and Predictions

DEMPO v JCT Dempo demolished defending champions Churchill Brothers 4-2 to station themselves at the top of the table. After their shocking defeats in rounds 15 and 16 against minnows, the morale-boosting win against Churchill took them two points clear of nearest rival Mahindra United. In the meanwhile, JCT also extended their undefeated run to four consecutive rounds beating Mumbai FC in their last league match. But JCT will be concerned with their away form in this campaign with just two wins so far. In the first leg match between the two teams, it was Armando Colaco’s Dempo that came out triumphant in JCT’s own den – Ludhiana. So the boys from Punjab will be looking forward for revenge of their home defeat. Sunil Chetri’s departure to USA Major League Soccer is a crucial blow for Dempo, and JCT will surely try to exploit the home side’s rather inexperienced attacking prowess to at least snatch a point from this away […]

Premiership Forecast: Arsenal Return To ‘The Scene Of The Crime’

Prediction STATISTICS: Last week, our experts predicted FOUR (40%) results correctly with ONE perfect score. ————————————————————————————————————————————– BIRMINGHAM v ARSENAL (Saturday – 8:30 pm IST – LIVE! on Star Sports) Remember this place, Eduardo? No team has beaten Birmingham at St. Andrews since September and the home side will be eager to defend that record against a weary Arsenal. Carsley and O’Connor are still long term absentees, while Murphy continues to recover from a hamstring injury. Arsenal are on a roll, but survived a West Ham scare last week. However, they did lose Vermaelen to a red card for this match, which could prove costly. Nicklas Bendtner is fifty-fifty for this game and Gallas is out with a calf injury. There are still no recoveries made by Van Persie, Djorou, Gibbs and Ramsey. Mcleish’s side will roughen up Arsenal again and the home side will pick up a point, if not all three. TheHardTackle’s Prediction: Birmingham 1-1 Arsenal TheHardTackle’s Player To […]

Ivory Coast: The Hope of Africa

The World Cup, being held in South Africa, will present the best opportunity yet for an African team to reach the semi-finals for the very first time. Each of the six participating nations will have the support of one billion Africans. Each team will represent not just its country, but an entire continent. As the world shifts its focus to Africa, all of Africa will probably shift its focus to the Elephants – Cote d’Ivoire. It was not always the case as Cameroon and Nigeria were for long regarded as African flag-bearers, but such is the talent at the disposal of a country located at the south coast of West Africa that all hopes will be on them to make the entire continent proud. In Didier Drogba, Salomon Kalou, Kolo Toure, Yaya Toure and Emanuel Eboue, Ivory Coast has its very own golden generation. Each one is a star in his own right, but has been unable to replicate the […]

Match Preview: Inter Visit Rome For Potential Decider

INTER MILAN vs A.S.ROMA Stadio Olimpico, Rome After 30 rounds, Inter leads the table with 63 points in the bag; Milan and Roma are both close behind, with 59 points each. However, as they say, the devil lies in the details. Milan have a very tough run-in. Six out of the last eight games are against strong teams (Cagliari, Sampdoria, Palermo, Genoa, Fiorentina and Juventus), with four of these being away games. With the exception of Cagliari, the other five are in the race for the fourth spot, which means none of them will take the games lightly. Also, in spite of Ronaldinho getting all plaudits, Milan have looked like a mid-table team, in the absence of Alessandro Nesta. With Nesta likely to miss a majority of the season, Milan’s challenge is very likely to peter out. Roma, on the other hand, have the easiest run-in among the three. After the game against Inter, they only have the Derby della […]

The Internazionale Story : Chapter 3

Massimo Moratti took over Inter in the summer of 1995 promising quick relief to the success-starved Internazionale fans. His very first transfer window involved three players who would go on to become legends for different clubs. Transfer Missteps To start with, there was Dennis Bergkamp, who had three disappointing seasons since arriving from Ajax and was allowed to leave for London. The rest, as they say, is history. Two relatively unknown fullbacks arrived that season to cover some glaring gaps at the back. While Javier Zanetti would go on to become a club legend and arguably the world’s best right-back, Roberto Carlos’ cameo became a symbol of the legendary shortsightedness at Inter. A year after he arrived, the club deemed him ordinary and shipped him to Real Madrid in exchange for thirty-year old Ivan Zamorano. Inter finished the 1995-96 season a poor seventh in the domestic league, barely managing to qualify for Europe. By the end of the season they had […]

Man Utd 2-1 Liverpool: Park Sends United Top

Manchester United gained revenge and ended their run of defeats against Liverpool to go top of the Premier League table with a 2-1 come from behind victory at Old Trafford. Fernando Torres’s early header gave the visitors the lead but Wayne Rooney’s penalty and a Ji Sung Park header meant vital three points for the home team. The much anticipated battle between the two bitter rivals started off at an explosive pace and Fernando Torres gave the visitors an early lead with a fabulous header. Torres started the move when he seized on a momentary lapse from Michael Carrick in the fifth minute to feed Steven Gerrard with an excellent back-heel. Gerrard found Dirk Kuyt on the right, whose measured cross found an unmarked Torres in the box. The home side responded quickly through Antonio Valencia’s defense-piercing run. Valencia was illegally stopped by Mascherano, who hauled the winger down from behind and referee Howard Webb immediately pointed to the spot. […]

Match Preview: Man Utd v Liverpool

MANCHESTER UNITED V LIVERPOOL Old Trafford Manchester, England March 21, 2010 1900 IST With 36 league trophies and 8 European cups between them, it doesn’t get any bigger than this in English football. The intensity of hatred, sense of anticipation and the vibrations of success can be felt all through England whenever Manchester United and Liverpool rekindle their age-old rivalry. While United are going for an unprecedented fourth consecutive title, Liverpool are meandering in fifth and in danger of losing their champions league spot. MANCHESTER UNITED The team from Old Trafford has been in good form of late – winning their previous five games including a League Cup triumph against Aston Villa at Wembley and a thrashing of Milan at Old Trafford. Although there is not much requirement of incentives when United face their fierce north-west rivals, revenge for their humiliation last season and a place at the top of the table are extra sources of motivation. The End Of An Inglorious European Campaign

A little more than a week back, A.C Milan were ousted from the Champions League in the round of 16 courtesy the defending English champions Manchester United; thereby ending their woeful European campaign this season. Milan returned to the top flight of European football this season but with the protagonists of their European return all leaving – Maldini hanging up his boots and Kaka sold to Madrid – and a new manager Leonardo in charge, European glory looked far fetched for the Italian giants. An embarrassing defeat at Old Trafford Pitted against Marseille, Zurich and the flamboyant Madrid, the Rossoneri were drawn in an easy group and were favourites to advance. The Italian club eventually advanced to the next round but only after putting a below par performance in the group stage in which they failed to win even a single home game picking up just two points at the San Siro. After a hard fought away win against Marseille, […]
