Game week 8 of the English Premier League produced many exciting games including Arsenal’s defeat of United and City thrashing Newcastle. But it was all overshadowed with the sacking of Brendan Rodgers from Liverpool and Dick Advocaat’s resignation from the Sunderland job.
One of the fiercest rivalries in the history football will be renewed on Saturday when Liverpool travel up the M62 to face Manchester United at Old Trafford, a destination where the Reds have had mixed fortunes in the past few years.
Manchester City maintained their 100% win record with a fourth consecutive win, while almost all their rivals stopped and stuttered in an astonishing gameweek in the English Premier League. Here are the 11 players and the manager who were outstanding this weekend. Goalkeeper – Tim Howard (Everton) There were other contenders for goalie of the week, but Tim Howard put up a valiant performance helping the Toffees earn a valuable point against Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane. The North Londoners – who are enduring a frustrating start to the season – were stopped by a resilient and stubborn Howard, who was at hand to thwart star striker Harry Kane in a one-on-one situation. The American has made more saves than any other keeper this season, and he also has much to celebrate with a recall to the national set-up for the friendlies against Brazil and Peru. Center-Backs – Angelo Ogbonna (West Ham) and Damien Delaney (Crystal Palace) Keeping […]
Gameweek 3 of the Barclays Premier League saw yet another clinical performance from City, some cagey affairs and the trend of poor home performances continued, with only 6 home wins in 30 games played so far. Sterling performance by City in Merseyside Raheem Sterling enjoyed a victorious return to Merseyside, helping his new side Manchester City to a 2-0 win against Everton. The young Englishman had a field day on the left hand side and showed a clever understanding with Kolarov. The Serbian was always a willing runner overlapping with Sterling and the duo created a lot of chances before the left-back scored a super goal from a tight angle. David Silva, once again showed his creativity and Yaya Toure is back to his best it seems. City look a scary prospect with that squad and with Kevin de Bruyne rumored to sign, the blues from Manchester can only get better. Arsenal and Liverpool play out a thrilling 0-0 […]
The midfielders separate a proper team from the mediocre ones. We look at the top five midfield nominees of the season, who were the heart and soul for their respective teams , and deserve to be the midfielder of the year Ivan Rakitic (FC Barcelona) The Swiss born Croat must be in dreamland at the moment. After making a dream move to Barcelona at the start of the season, Rakitic would have bitten your hand off if you would have said he`d end up with a Champions League winners medal in his first season at Barcelona, let alone bagging the treble. Rakitic ended up winning all three trophies on offer and most importantly, played a crucial role in central midfield throughout the season. The former Schalke man has taken the role of club legend Xavi, and formed a formidable partnership with the likes of Iniesta and Busquets which helped the devastating triumvirate of Messi, Neymar and Suarez to wreak havoc […]
It has been a mixed bag for Brendan Rodgers in his Liverpool career so far, and after a poor season, he faces his biggest test yet, finding solutions for complicated problems this summer. Rewind to this time last season, Liverpool had agonizingly fallen short, for the title and finished runners-up to Manchester City. Brendan Rodgers was hailed as the best thing that could happen for Liverpool, and the Northern Irishman would have loved to kick on from last season`s title assault. What followed is a disaster by any standard. First Luis Suarez was off to Barcelona, and then the cash splurge on unproven players who were simply not up to the mark. Raheem Sterling`s uncertain future at the club, failure to finish in the top four, Steven Gerrard`s departure from the club all adds up to his woes, and Brendan Rodgers will sure have a tough time convincing the owners that he is the right man for the job. The […]
After a demoralising exit in the FA Cup against Aston Villa, Brendan Rodgers` Liverpool were subdued and held 0-0 by an inspired Tony Pulis led West Bromwich side, which all but ended their hopes of finishing in the top 4 this season. Rodgers under huge pressure For the first time in his reign as Liverpool boss, Brendan Rodgers has looked to run out of ideas. Having spent more than a 100 million pounds in player purchases after Luis Suarez`s departure, it is safe to say that none of his signings have made a substantial impact this season. Maybe the transfer committee looked at it in the wrong perspective, expecting young prospects to flourish in their first season at the club. Gerrard`s waning influence and his departure at the end of the season has not helped matters, and the uncertain future of their young star Raheem Sterling has clearly unsettled Rodgers and his team. Time will tell if he is still […]
WEST BROMWICH ALBION v LIVERPOOL The Hawthorns Saturday 25th April, 2015, 15:00 GMT ********* In what has been a very disappointing season, last Sunday`s defeat to Villa in the FA Cup turned out to be the lowest point for Liverpool. The Reds are back in action in the Premier League, where they take on The Baggies and will look to restore some pride. According to Brendan Rodgers, a top four finish and a piece of silverware was Liverpool`s objective this season . Two semi-final losses in domestic cup competitions and a disappointing run in Europe compounded Liverpool`s misery. The ‘dream final’ send-off for Steven Gerrard went up in smoke, and unless something dramatically happens, the Reds are set to miss out on the top four as well. The game against West Bromwich Albion will be seen as the start of the countdown to their skipper Gerrard`s farewell, and they would like to make amends for last week`s disaster with a win […]
There is something special about Brazilian footballers, they give a whole new dimension to a side, and Liverpool were without that dimension when their Brazilian Lucas was out of the side. His return, with 8 games to go, is just what the doctor ordered for Liverpool.
Everyone likes an amazing story, especially when a small town club is on the cusp of promotion to the Premier League. AFC Bournemouth or ‘The Cherries’ owe a lot to their manager Eddie Howe, who has been sensational in guiding them to the top of the Championship. Boscombe St John`s Institute FC, or Bournemouth AFC as they are presently called, can hardly boast of an illustrious history with their only major achievement being the FA Cup win over Manchester United in 1984 under former Spurs boss Harry Redknapp. They are on the verge of something very brilliant, and have the opportunity to play at the biggest stage in England, the Premier League. With the 4-0 win against Blackpool on Saturday, Bournemouth are on 69 points, level with Watford and Middlesbrough but with a better goal difference. This is one of the closest Championship seasons to date with as many as five teams in contention for automatic promotion to the English […]
