Real Progress Or Flattering To Deceive yet Again? – Arsenal FC Season Review 2014/15:

Arsenal won their 12th FA cup to cap off a season that saw them promise, yet again but failed to emerge as Chelsea’s closest challengers. As Mourinho pointed out, the season isn’t played from January to August, and Arsenal again failed to build on their FA cup success from last year. A season of two halves: With the incredible amount of football being played these days, a lot of teams were expected to struggle post the World Cup. Mesut Ozil and Per Mertesacker were hardly at their best at the start of the season and while August went by unbeaten, the team was hardly challenging for the title. The turning point came with the arrival of Frances Coquelin from Charlton, courtesy yet another injury crisis that saw Wenger alarmingly shorn of central midfield options. What followed was a brilliant run as Arsenal went on the rampage in the Premier League and the FA Cup, backed by a double pivot […]

One more of Basel’s young talented players, Fabian Schar has now signed for 1899 Hoffenheim. Schaar was linked considerably to clubs as far and varied as Arsenal FC, Manchester United and clubs in the Serie A. Juventus were also said to be particularly keen Alexander Rosen, sporting director at Hoffenheim said the following, “For him to sign for Hoffenheim is certainly confirmation of the great work we are doing here. We have taken another step forward in our squad planning with the signing of Fabian Schar. Schar’s build-up play is very good and he is someone who has already been able to gain international experience at a young age, yet still has plenty of potential.” He is 23 and could an international regular with Switzerland. It seems to be an unexpected move, but in the context of the Euros coming up, it is one that makes a fair bit of sense. Also, Hoffenheim have certainly been on the up in […]

There was quite the furore when AS . broke the news that Marco Verratti had agreed a deal to Real Madrid. And then Gab Marcotti on ESPN FC commented that Verratti’s agent had met with Real and signing fees were discussed. There are quite a few reasons why the transfer makes sense, but Real released a statement saying “In light of the rumours spread by various media outlets concerning an alleged offer on the part of Real Madrid for the player Marco Verratti, Real Madrid have not made any contact with PSG or the player’s agent, and therefore these rumours are completely untrue.” That’s fairly unequivocal. But these are strange times, and Madrid’s transfer refutements have counted for far less in the past. There is no doubt that Verratti is one of the most coveted young players in the world and inhabits that rarefied air that seems to separate him and Pogba from the rest of their crop. He is […]

Jose Mourinho, in one of those flashes of eminently quotable brilliance stitched a tale about his rivals at the awards ceremony. He took rather roundabout potshots at all of Manchester City, United and Arsenal. What he had to say about Arsenal was ‘The third team was almost there. They wanted to play with two goals, scoring some, also conceding some but they were fantastic. They scored really beautiful goals. But they asked the international board to play only between January and April. They were told ‘no chance, you have to play between August and May’ Arsenal finished the season on a good run, it must be said. But a sustained title challenge was never on the cards though, and even the staunches of Arsenal fans would agree. Football being football, there is always the hope that transfer window surgery will address these issues. Wenger’s last two windows have been statements of their own with Ozil and Sanchez being brought in, […]
