The German Bundesliga is all set to start in the coming weekend and despite the fact that it doesn’t have the same chauvinism as the Premier League, the quality of football is in no way inferior. Last season, the Bundesliga did surprise us to a certain extent as the likes of Wolfsburg and Borussia Monchengladbach had brilliant seasons to displace Schalke and Borussia Dortmund in the top four places. In the upcoming season, expect the unexpected once again, well apart from Bayern Munich winning the title that is. Ahead of the Bundesliga Hinrunde, we jot down what the Bundesliga fans can expect. Bayern once again favourites to win the League Surprising? Not really. Both Wolfsburg and Borussia Monchengladbach were brilliant last season. Dieter Hecking’s side were perhaps the only side who challenged Bayern Munich for the title, but let’s be honest, everyone knew who was going to win it despite the way Hecking’s side dismantled the Bavarians in the late […]

Borussia Dortmund host VfL Wolfsburg in the DFB Pokal final at the Olympiastadion, Berlin. The two teams will go into the game with contrasting seasons behind them. While Wolfsburg had a stellar season and finished behind eventual Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund had a very patchy campaign. Jürgen Klopp’s men were in the relegation zone at the end of the first half of the season but turned their season around to some extent in the Ruckrunde. Dieter Hecking will use the motivation of finishing second in the league and will want his side to do exactly what they did a few weeks ago when they beat Dortmund at home. Jürgen Klopp will manage Dortmund for the last time and will want his side to finish the season just as they started it- by winning silverware (they had beaten Bayern Munich in August to win the DFL Super cup). Both the teams have a set of players who can win games on […]

Borussia Dortmund vs VfL Wolfsburg Olympiastadion, Berlin Saturday, 30th May, 20:00 GMT *** The DFB Pokal final is a chance for redemption for both Wolfsburg and Borussia Dortmund. Wolfsburg will not want to finish second best again after having given Bayern a very brief scare in the Bundesliga title race while Dortmund’s season simply did not take off. The fixture will be Jürgen Klopp’s final game in charge of Dortmund and he’ll want to finish on a high. Dieter Hecking, on the other hand, will definitely want his side to win some silverware after having played so well in the league. Wolfsburg are unbeaten against Dortmund this season. After having drawn at the Signal Iduna Park, Wolfsburg beat Dortmund at home in the penultimate game of the Bundesliga. However, the last time these two sides met in the DFB Pokal over a year ago, Dortmund triumphed by two goals with a certain Robert Lewandowski on the score sheet. Klopp […]

The penultimate weekend of the 2014-15 Barclays Premier League had a bit of everything in it. Despite Chelsea wrapping up the title a few weeks back, the race for the final automatic Champions league spots was still on between Manchester United and Arsenal. The Europa league spots are still up for grabs as well thanks to Liverpool’s shock loss. Southampton picked up a stunning win to go within two points of Liverpool and could yet surpass the Merseysiders.

Bengaluru FC V Persipura Jayapura Sree Kanteerava Stadium, Bengaluru 12th May 2015, 19:00 IST *** I-league holders Bengaluru FC host Indonesian giants Persipura Jayapura in the AFC Cup group stage and the game will be an intriguing one to watch as Ashley Westwood’s men will want to finish as the group toppers. The two sides are separated by just one point. Bengaluru have been in brilliant form in the AFC Cup since losing to Persipura in their second game and have won three games in a row. Their domestic form has been impressive as well as they had won three games in a row without conceding a single goal until last week’s draw against Shillong. Line-ups and tactics Bengaluru FC Bengaluru strength in the competition has undoubtedly been their defending. The team have conceded just five goals, but three of those came against Persipura in the reverse fixture. All of Bengaluru’s wins have come by a one goal margin […]

Borussia Mönchengladbach v Bayer Leverkusen Borussia-Park, Mönchengladbach Saturday, 15:30 GMT *** Its third versus fourth in the Bundesliga as Borussia Monchengladbach host Bayer Leverkusen at home. The game is also a clash of probably the two best teams in the Bundesliga at the moment as the two sides have been on a brilliant unbeaten run of late and have hence strengthened their league positions and closed the gap between themselves and second-placed Wolfsburg. Leverkusen have a better goal difference than Monchengladbach as they have scored 59 times compared to Gladbach who have found the net 47 times, but it the home side who have been more clinical defensively. Only two points separate the sides, so we could be in for an end to end game considering that an automatic Champions League qualification spot is at stake. Tactics and lineup Borussia Mönchengladbach Mönchengladbach have been brilliant of late and eight wins in their unbeaten 11 game run just underlines that fact. […]
