Salgaocar FC would be kicking themselves after throwing away an opportunity to get a draw out of the away match against title challengers East Bengal on Sunday. The Greens had done well to cancel out Md Rafique’s goal in the second half through a deflected header from Darryl Duffy. However, East Bengal came back strongly in the last 10 minutes, as Bello Rasaq scored the winner. Salgaocar themselves had their chances in the dying minutes of the match, but East Bengal custodian Luis Barretto was up to the mark to make the saves. One big talking point for Salgaocar is that they cannot field star froward Jackichand Singh for the full 90 minutes, due to a niggling injury. Manager Santosh Kashyap confirmed after the match that Jackichand would mostly be featuring from the bench for the rest of the season due to the injury. “Jackichand is still not a 100% fit because he requires ankle surgery at the end of the […]

The I-League is a neck and neck affair between the two Kolkata clubs now, as East Bengal have moved to within one point of arch rivals Mohun Bagan, after a narrow 2-1 win over Salgaocar at the Barasat Stadium on Sunday. Goals from Belo Rasaq and Mohammed Rafique did the trick for East Bengal, while Salgaocar striker Darryl Duffy leveled the scores briefly in the second half. The Red and Gold brigade got off to a great start in the first half, as they looked to get the early goal in this crucial match, while Salgaocar looked to play on the counter. The Greens were playing the long-ball game, looking to hoove the ball up field, in the hope that striker Duffy latches on to one of these balls. This tactic made sure that the crowd at the Barasat Stadium got to see an intense battle between East Bengal star Bernard Mendy and Salgaocar no. 10 Martin Scott. Md. Rafique, who […]

Mohun Bagan are three points clear at the top of the I-League table and are unbeaten so far in this season’s I-League, but a big concern for their fans is the frm of star striker Cornell Glen. The Trinidad & Tobago World Cupper had started off the season in great style, scoring four goals in five goals in four matches in all competitions. His form has dwindled since the 3-1 victory over Singapore club Tampines Rovers in the AFC Champions League qualifiers. Sincce then, Glen has failed to score in any of the last five I-League matches. However, Mohun Bagan assistant coach Shankar Lal Chakraborty believes that it is only a bad phase that the 34-year-old is going through right now, and it’s only a matter of time that Glen gets back to form. “Everyone goes through patches of bad form. Every player has their own way of playing. While Katsumi and Sony are fast, Glen is someone who likes to hold […]

Sporting Clube de Goa are one of the teams trying to break into the top three of the I-League, but the difference between them and Mohun Bagan was clear to see, as the Mariners nicked a 1-0 victory to cement their position at the top on Saturday. Sporting coach Mateus Costa was certainly impressed by the strength and depth of the Mohun Bagan side, and said that this victory could prove to be a great morale booster for the Mariners, who are yet to be beaten in the I-League so far this season. “It is still a long way. The way they are playing now it is definitely possible. Today’s victory will definitely be a boost [for Mohun Bagan],” said Costa. The Mohun Bagan defence, that has come under a lot of criticism this season, were successful in keeping their former striker Odafa Okolie at bay during the match. However, Costa believes that Odafa played well in spite of all the […]

Mohun Bagan managed to notch up their fifth victory of the I-League campaign, as a Yusa Katsumi goal proved to be enough to defeat Sporting Clube de Goa, at the Barasat Stadium, on Saturday. While Bagan manager Sanjoy Sen was absent from the dugout due to illness, the Green and Maroon brigade made quite a few changes to their starting XI, with Brendon Fernandes, Raju Gaikwad, and Pronay Haldar getting starts. Both the teams looked lively in the opening exchanges, with Mohun Bagan looking to pin their opponents into their defensive third. As we have seen in most of Mohun Bagan’s games, Sony Norde has been the focal point of the attacks in most of the matches. The Sporting players had chances of their own, with the likes of Nico Fernandes, Ganesh Thakur, Odafa Okolie, and Glan Martins troubling Mohun Bagan custodian Debjit Majumder. The Mohun Bagan defensive pairing of Luciano Sabrosa and Kingshuk Debnath held on however, to reach the 45 […]

The 2015/16 edition of the I-League is nearing the halfway stage and if early trends are any indication then it is likely to be a three way battle between East Bengal, Mohun Bagan and Bengaluru FC. The Lal-Hould brigade after a rather slow start have now won three of their last four matches and are slowly coming into their groove and will be fancying their chances to win the I-League crown. Ranti Martins has been the best player for East Bengal so far and has led the attack admirably for East Bengal, specially given the fact that South Korean Do Dong-hyun has been in patchy form. The Nigerian striker showed his class in the last match against Shillong Lajong where he notched up a hat-trick – the first of the 2015/16 I League season. While he scored his second goal from a long range shot from outside the box, he dummied past the Lajong defender and the custodian for his third. Martins […]

Shillong Lajong have not had a great track record at the Barasat Stadium, but managed to get a point against defending champions Mohun Bagan, on Wednesday. Manager Thagboi Singto lauded his team’s efforts, even saying that they should have been able to take all the three points from the match. The side from the North East got off to a great start in the first half, and even went into the lead with a goal from Chinglensana Konsham. However a second half strike by Mohun Bagan striker Jeje Lalpekhlua leveled the score up. In spite of losing out on the chance to inflict the first I-League defeat of the season on Mohun Bagan, Lajong coach Singto was all praises for his team. “Enough has been said about Mohun Bagan. But today [I want to] talk about my team,” said Singto. “As a team, I think we stuck to the plans and of course in the second half Mohun Bagan came back. […]

The Nepal national men’s team managed to squeeze out a 2-1 win against India in the final of the South Asian Games football championship, at the Indira Gandhi Stadium, in Guwahati, on Monday. It was a tale to two halves in the final, as India scored through a Halicharan Narzary penalty in the first half, but Nepal took the game into their own hands with goals from Prakash Budhatokhi and Nawayug Shreshtha in the second. India gave yet another dominating performance over their Nepalese counterparts, but the Blue Tigers failed to make the grade, as they missed a flurry of chances to ultimately lose the game, and settle for silver in the match. The number of chances that the Indians missed was quite overwhenling, with forward Sumit Passi failing to make much of an impact up front. Passi had actually managed to score with a looping header over Nepal goalkeeper Bikesh Kuthu, but the former was adjudged to be offside. After many […]

Shillong Lajong are a relatively young side, and that was abundantly clear when they came up against the experienced East Bengal, who completely routed them 4-0. However, when asked if it is the inexperience that spelled doom for his team at the Barasat Stadium, Shillong Lajong coach Thangboi Singto said that inexperience may be an issue, but the young players need to perform well, in order to keep playing for the team. “They’re young boys, but they need to learn learn quickly, they need to fight. They are put in the first XI, or the 18, so we believe that they can do something,” said Singto after the match. “So when given a chance, they need to prove [themselves]. Otherwise its tough for them, and tough for the team.” The 41-year-old manager seemed quite irritated after the heavy defeat to East Bengal, and said that his side needs to play well and take the chances that they create, in order […]
