Arsenal FC eked out a 1-0 win against Newcastle United, and manager Arsene Wenger believes that he was looking for this kind of performance from his team, where they showed that they “can dig deep as well when it’s needed”.
This win puts the Gunners firmly in the driving seat for the Premier League title, with a two-point lead at the top of the table, as Leicester City drew their own match against AFC Bournemouth, after a Riyad Mahrez Penalty miss.
“It was hard work. But we prepared ourselves mentally to work hard and to earn the right to win the hard way,” Wenger was quoted saying in ESPN FC after the match. “We were not at our best today, we know that, and we had to dig deep. But we can dig deep as well when it is needed.”
Arsenal FC Defenders Gunning opponents down
Wenger pointed out the importance of the defenders scoring the match-winning goals, saying that it is important to have the goalscoring capability from the set pieces, in order to win the tough matches.
“Our recent goals come from the centre-backs, and that’s good because you need to score between six and 10 goals from set pieces if you want to be at the front of the league,” said Wenger.
Is Petr Cech a ‘bus’ unto himself?
The Czech Republic international seems to have completely transformed Arsenal FC’s fortune ever since arriving from Chelsea FC in the summer. Petr Cech has now etched his name in Premier League history with 171 clean sheets, and shows no signs of stopping, as he helps Arsenal FC challenge for the league title.
“He helped us again today, and in a very convincing way. On top of that, he’s reassuring, he’s calm, he has absolutely had a top, top performance again today,” Wenger continued.
