Liverpool FC have officially announced the signing of 18-year-old English defender Joseph Gomez from championship side Charlton Athletic. Joe Gomez becomes Liverpool’s fourth signing of the season after James Milner Adam Bogdan and Danny Ings.
Joe Gomez played 21 Championship games for Charlton Athletic last season. The youngster had an impressive stint in the Championship which earned him a place in the U19 side England side. He made three appearances for England last year. After joining the Premier League giants, Gomez sounded excited.
He said, “It’s a dream come true. It’s a bit surreal and it hasn’t really hit me yet. But I’m buzzing and just excited to get started.
“The club has got great history and it’s a great club, and one that I’ve always been following from when I was young.
“The style of football and the top players here was somewhere that I wanted to go and get better and learn, and play good football. It was an easy decision.”
Joe Gomez made 36 interceptions, 9 blocks and 80 clearances in total for Charlton last season in the Championship. The defender has the ability to play both as a center back as well as a full-back. Liverpool can very well tap in on the player’s versatility and utilise him as per their needs.
Liverpool had conceded 48 goals in total last season in the Premier League game. Their defense was always woeful and the club had to suffer a lot. Brendan Rodgers had also experimented with a 3 back formation which eventually did not give him much success. The Reds have released Glen Johnson and extended contracts of Martin Skrtel and Kolo toure. With Gomez’s inclusion Rodgers has now the option of fielding the young talent in the right-back position which was left empty by Johnson.
