In the ultimate last gasp victory, Atletico scored in the 3rd of 4 extra minutes after full time to win against Sporting Gijon drawing praise from their enigmatic manager.

It can’t get any more thrilling than Atletico Madrid’s last minute, dramatic victory over Sporting Gijon this past Sunday with the club somehow getting all three points from the game by the skin of their teeth.

Antoine Greizmann got the win for the club when he headed in in the 3rd minute of an additional 4 minutes of stoppage time. The win in the tricky encounter helped former champions Atletico climb to 3rd on the La Liga table with 23 points, 4 behind league leaders Barcelona.

After the match Atletico Coach Deiego Simeone was all praise for his team. According to Goal.com . , he said, “I think that the perfect definition for this game that was very hard, well played by the rival which obviously generated complications for us, is insisting.”

“The team never stopped insisting, playing a good game at times, or at others playing too much at the top, with moments trying to break away through the wings trying to win cleared balls, trying to solve their counters in the best way.

“They are fast on the counter-attack but I think that the perfect word that best associates what I said yesterday is a synonym of Atletico that I forgot, which is insistence. Today, once again, insisting gave us a very big prize. When a team is as constant about winning throughout the match as it was, it wins and today, thank God, it won at the end.”, he added.

Scoring more goals could be the key

Barcelona seem to have not been perturbed by the injury to Lionel Messi and are riding the Neymar-Suarez wave at the top of the table. Atletico have seven wins compared to Barca’s nine. They have conceded half of Barcelona’s tally of 12 goals so far, but fall nine behind when it comes to goals scored by Barcelona and ten behind arch rivals Real Madrid.

Atletico need to look to strikers Antoine Greizmann and new acquisition Jackson Martinez to match the goal scoring feats of their rivals if they are to seriously challenge Barca and Real for the La Liga crown.
