Zico has urged Brazil to sack manager Felipe Luiz Scolari, while blaming the administrators for the lack of talent in the current squad.
Brazilian manager Luiz Felipe Scolari has come under a lot of criticism following the humiliating defeat they suffered at the hands of Germany in the semi-final. Former Brazilian international Zico is the latest name to ask for Scolari’s sacking.
In an astonishing match, Germany decimated Brazil 1-7 in the first semi-final of the World Cup on Tuesday and Luiz Felipe Scolari’s men went down in the history books for all the wrong reasons. It was Brazil’s biggest ever defeat in the World Cup and their first home defeat since 1975.
The Germans were the favourites heading into the game as Brazil were considerably weakened due to the absence of Neymar and Thiago Silva, but none could have predicted such a one-sided encounter. The match was marked out as the darkest point in Brazilian football history, according to many, and Scolari has come under staunch criticism in the following days.
Former Brazilian international Zico has criticized the Brazil coach following that defeat and has asked for his sacking by the board.
“We should thank him (Scolari) and thank (assistant coach Carlos Alberto) Parriera too. But we need to choose new people with new thoughts about how to play the Brazilian way.” – Zico said in an interview.
A host of names has already been linked with the job, but Zico believes Sao Paulo manager Ramalho is the right man to take this team forward.
“He is one the greatest champions of the Brazilian league, which is one of the hardest in the world to win.” – He said.
Zico insisted that Brazil and Scolari were not tactically flexible and other teams worked them out. But the former World Cupper did accept that Scolari had few options to choose from the talent pool available to him currently.
“We had no alternatives.
“They stayed focused entirely on the success of the 2013 Confederations Cup. They kept the same formation and the same team. Everyone had a year to work out exactly how to play against Brazil.
“If you look at the starting players in the last year, none of them were key players at their clubs.
“Look at Neymar, the best player in Brazil, but how many times was he on the bench for Barcelona last season? Fred, Marcelo, Hulk all played inconsistently. Even David Luiz and Oscar, you can’t say they were first choices at Chelsea.” – Zico added.
Zico also believes that the lack of talent in the current Brazilian team is do more with the fact that most of the youngsters go to Europe too early and has blamed the administrators for it.
“Pep Guardiola has always said his style, his approach was inspired by the Brazilian national team, but now we don’t have that style. Johan Cruyff has said we are not playing true Brazilian football.
“(Jose) Mourinho has said it doesn’t seem like we know how to use our talent to play true football. I don’t know why we don’t listen to these great minds of football.
“The CBF (Brazilian football federation) needs to invite the heads of all the clubs in Brazil to a private meeting and ask them what they need to make sure the big names, the best players, play every Sunday in Brazil instead of in Europe.” – He said.
