The second North London derby of the season is upon us as Arsenal host Tottenham Hotspur in the third round clash of the FA Cup. Both these clubs have already faced each other in the league this season, a match the Gunners won 1-0 as Olivier Giroud found the back of the net with a lovely finish. It was Arsenal’s third win in a row at the Emirates against their London rivals, one which set them off to a wonderful run the league.
Arsenal are currently leading the points table in the Premier League, while Tottenham have moved up to sixth with a wonderful win over Manchester United in their last game. Spurs have already undergone a managerial change this season and Tim Sherwood has been successful in turning around the fortunes of the club so far since his appointment. This revival has also impressed Arsene Wenger and the Frenchman believes that Spurs are more ‘adventurous’ after changing their system to accommodate two strikers upfront.
“First of all they have lost one big game against Liverpool but if you look at their overall record since the start of the season, it isn’t bad.
“I’m not surprised that Tottenham can win football games. They won at Manchester United but Man United this season, even if I think Tottenham played very well, are a bit more vulnerable. They took advantage well of that because they played at a good pace going forward.
“They are more adventurous. With Soldado and Adebayor [up front], they have found a balance – at the moment that suits the team well. They always looked dangerous at Man United and that’s certainly the pair that we’ll have to keep quiet.” – The Arsenal manager said.
Former Arsenal forward Emmanuel Adebayor has been in superb form under Tim Sherwood and has been one of the major reasons behind this turn around. Arsene Wenger is well aware of the talent that the 29-year-old possesses and expressed his admiration at how quickly he has been able to return to top form after suffering from fitness concerns.
“What is amazing for him is how fit he was when he came back – how quickly he adapted to top-level competition again,” he said. “He’s a player with special talent, I’m in a good position to know.” – Wenger added.
Arsenal crashed out of the FA Cup last season after facing an embarrassing defeat against Blackburn Rovers at the Emirates and that loss still lingers in the mind of Arsene Wenger.
“I had the luck to win four FA Cups, that means I always put the effort in. I’m very keen to do it again, it’s a long time now.
“Honestly I still have in my mind the fact that we went out last year at home against Blackburn, that was not good enough for us and we have to make sure we absolutely put the effort in to have the chance to go through.
“It’s an opportunity that we want to take. On top of that, afterwards we have nine days until the next Premier League game [so] we can give absolutely everything in this game.” –Wenger said.
Arsene Wenger has also insisted that he will treat this match against Tottenham like any other top-level Premier League match, which means he will look to field his best side tomorrow. He also stressed on how determined his players are to win this game.
“I will only rest the players who are on the fringes of injuries or are very tired. But that will be very restricted to a minimal number of players.
“I just consider that it is our next game – we are Arsenal Football Club and we want to win the next game, that is vital for us.
“In this case I consider it a top level Premier League game, that means I have to play a team who has a chance to win a top level Premier League game.
“My players are highly focused on this game. They are determined to win every single game they play, their attitude has been absolutely fantastic since the start of the season and will be like that on Saturday.” – he explained.
