Virgil Van Dijk, the Dutch centre back who has been a revelation at Celtic this season, is apparently on his way to the Premier League with both Manchester clubs expected to be in the reckoning to sign him. Van Dijk’s agent Henk-Maarten Chin believes that his client will be plying his trade in the Premier League the next season.

Henk-Maarten Chin said: “There is certainly interest. Many English clubs are interested in him – the absolute top clubs.

“They watch him and are very keen. There have been no official approaches for Virgil yet but that will come after the season ends.

“There’s certainly far more interest in him than we could have dreamed of.

“I expect something will happen for him this summer. The intention would be for him to earn a top transfer.”

It would be interested to see how the Hoops would react to this statement from Virgil Van Dijk’s agent as the player had established himself as quite the vital cog in Celtic’s fantastic SPL run this season. Van Dijk has established himself as one of the best defenders in the league following his meagre £2.6million move from Groningen last year.

Van Dijk’s agent Henk-Maarten Chin further emphasized the quality of the player by claiming that Van Dijk was the only player who gave a creditable show in the 6-1 hammering they received at the hands of Barcelona at Nou Camp.

“Celtic were outplayed by Barcelona but Virgil was the only player who was okay.

“Against AC Milan he made a great impression in his battles against Mario Balotelli and he wasn’t the only player Virgil did well against.”

With such statements sure to aggravate the rest of the squad it would be interesting to note how Celtic handles it. It is being believed by a section of the football critics that this statement is nothing but a provocation to pressurize Celtic into selling him. One thing is for sure though and that is that whichever Premier League club Van Dijk ends up at it would be an interesting saga right till the very end.

Both the Manchester clubs are in need of centre backs in the summer as the current season shows.

For the Red Devils, their skipper Nemanja Vidic is moving to Inter after being the rock for the side for such a long period of time. The player has already agreed terms with the Seria A side and this will leave a huge void in the United backline.

This will force manager David Moyes to look into the transfer market and Van Dijk can be the ideal replacement for the veteran player.

City, on the other hand, will also be forced to look into the market in search of a quality centre-back after the proven failure of their summer signing Martin Demichelis. The 33 year old has been a weak link in the City team and manager Pellegrini would like to replace him with a much younger Van Dijk.
