Tottenham Hotspur are close to completing the signing of Argentine defender Mateo Musacchio from Villarreal.
Tottenham Hotspur have looked to strengthen their defence in this transfer window and Villarreal defender Mateo Musacchio looks to be the next in line to arrive at White Hart Lane this summer.
The 23-year-old defender came up through the ranks of River Plate before being signed by Villarreal in 2009. Mussacchio was promoted to the first team in 2010 and has since then established himself in the starting line-up of the Spanish side.
The Argentina defender, who has won two caps for his national side, produced some wonderful performances last season and formed good understanding with Chechu Dorado and Gabriel Paulista at the center of the defence. Musacchio made 108 interceptions in the league last season, the highest in Spain, as Villarreal finished sixth in the table.
Following his wonderful season, Musacchio has drawn attention from a host of European clubs. The likes of Barcelona, Liverpool, Chelsea and Fiorentina have all been monitoring his progress at Villarreal; it is Tottenham Hotspur who have made the opening move in this race of his signature.
Spurs have gone about their business quietly this summer, in contrast to their exploits in the last transfer window. Mauricio Pochettino has mostly concentrated on strengthening the defence, which seemed porous last season under former manager Tim Sherwood. Tottenham have already signed Ben Davies, Eric Dier and Michael Vorm and according to latest reports Mateo Musacchio is close to being the latest addition.
Tottenham are willing to meet Villarreal’s valuation of £17m for the Argentine international and he is likely to complete his move to White Hart Lane in the next two days. Villarreal manager Marcelino had earlier confirmed about the negotiations with Spurs and insisted that a solution will be reached quickly.
“It’s a situation with three parties: the player, the buyer and the club in the middle.
“As I have said many times, if the club sell an important player it’s because the right conditions to do so have been met. It won’t be easy to replace him but the solution, for better or worse, will be found soon.” – Marcelino said earlier.
Arrival of Musacchio will put further questions on the future of Younes Kaboul, who has been linked with a move to Lazio, and Michael Dawson at White Hart Lane.
