Spain lost to Slovakia by 2-1 in their Euro 2016 qualifier and coach Vicente del Bosque was seemingly unhappy with the performance of his players.
Spain coach Del Bosque has made some major changes in the La Roja squad after their disastrous World Cup campaign but it now appears that he is struggling to find the right balance as Diego Costa failed to make any impact while captain Iker Casillas was at fault for the first goal. The coach also accepted the fact that team is not performing well in his press conference.
“I didn’t expect this result at all. It was unexpected. We pressed but it wasn’t a great performance. We should’ve scored at least one more but they caught us on the counter. We had them pegged back,” Spain coach Vicente del Bosque said.
“That’s football. We can’t complain about the players. We were patient but didn’t get things right and their keeper was outstanding,” Del Bosque said.
Striker Diego Costa has been in a great form for his new club Chelsea but the striker has yet to score for Spain but Del Bosque came to the defence of the player after yet another uninspiring performance.
“Diego Costa is playing with a lot of enthusiasm. We’re happy with the way he behaves and his emotions. It was a big effort from the whole team. None of us likes to lose,” Del Bosque added.
Like Diego Costa, another player who is under scanner is Iker Casillas. Casillas was at fault for a first goal of Slovakia but Del Bosque came to the rescue of his captain in his press conference. “Casillas had saved good chances from Slovakia prior to the first goal,” Del Bosque told reporters. “I didn’t see it clearly but the ball moved strangely and tricked Iker.”
Meanwhile, despite of such mediocre performance against comparatively smaller side like Slovakia, Del Bosque said that his team deserved a draw and that loss is not a fair result. “It’s the first defeat in 28 qualifiers. We drew level but in the end we go away without any points. I don’t have any complaints against my players. We had patience but we weren’t successful and their goalkeeper was outstanding. I think we at least deserved a draw. I don’t think we have a negative dynamic,” he said.
