Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid have set the record of first derby in the Champions League final. However, this is not going to be the only record broken in this season’s UCL. Spain is going to become the highest ever represented nation as Champions League, in terms of player appearances.
The UEFA Champions League was started in the year 1992 and since its inception, players of 37 countries has received the winner’s medal, with Spain getting the highest representation. And this number is guaranteed to rise with all Madrid showpiece. Meanwhile, Turkey and Uruguay will be getting their first winning medal after this final as Arda Turan, Diego Godin, Christian Rodriguez and Jose Gimenez are going to win it for their respective nations.
Followed by Spain, Italy (38) is the most successful nation. Following are the most represented nations:
- 46 Spain
- 38 Italy
- 26 Germany and Brazil
- 24 France
- 20 England, Netherlands
- 18 Portugal
- 11 Argentina
Meanwhile, since 1992, AC Milan is the most successful club in Europe. They have made 6 appearances in the finals, winning three. FC Barcelona have also won the competition thrice but Milan have more appearances in final than the Catalans.
However, Spain are the most successful nation with six victories in past twenty one years, one more than Italy. Spanish clubs have won the trophy in 1998, 2000, 2002, 2006, 2009 and 2011 while Italy has won the much coveted trophy in 1994, 1996, 2003, 2007 and 2010. English Premier League clubs comparatively less successful in this trophy as they have won the trophy only four times: in 1999, 2005, 2008 and 2012.
This is going to be the first derby in the Champions League final but this is not the first final where clubs of same country are playing against each other. Previously, this has happened for four times. Real Madrid overcame fellow Spanish club Valencia in 2000, Italian giants Milan and Juventus knocked horns in 2003 and Rosoneri came out as victorious while Manchester United beat Chelsea on penalties in 2008 to become the Champions. Ans most recently, German sides FC Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund come face to face at Wembley last year.
Coming back to Madrid, almost 70,000 people from the capital expected to travel to the final. Most of the fans will be going by car using A5 Motorway and car sharing websites are doing a great business in Madrid at the moment. Although both these clubs come from the same city, fan base of the both is totally different. Real Madrid, world’s richest club, is known for its global fan base, majority of Atletico Madrid fans come from working class families.
However, regardless of the final result, Spanish football is going to be the real winner tonight.
