Cristiano Ronaldo scored two goals as Real Madrid beat Sevilla to win the UEFA Super Cup.
Ronaldo was the best player in last year’s Champions League and he resumed the new season where he left off last season, scoring two goals to help Real Madrid win their first trophy of this campaign.
Ronaldo scored one goal in each half for Real Madrid and showed few signs of knee and thigh injury which proved crucial for the failure of Portugal in the World Cup in Brazil. And the player was seemingly happy with his efforts.
“I feel good. This was my first official game and I wasn’t sure what would happen but I feel ok out there. The team really helped me and scoring gave me confidence. I felt comfortable, and with no pains at all. I feel good for being able to help the team win this Cup but I will continue working,” Ronaldo said. He was speaking in a press conference after the game.
Real Madrid new signings Toni Kroos and James Rodriguez also played in this match and Ronaldo had a special praise for them too. He said: “I believe that the players Real Madrid bought – Toni Kroos, James Rodriguez and Keylor Navas – they’re going to give more support to the team and more quality.
“I am very glad for the quality we have in the squad. We’re going to try to win all the trophies. It’s good to win this trophy to give confidence to the team.”
No club has been successful in defending the Champions League title since 1993 but Ronaldo feels that Real Madrid has the ability to become champions of Europe for the second season in a row. “Madrid are going to be the first team [to retain the Champions League] I hope,”
“It’s an important trophy, the Super Cup, so we start on the right foot,” Ronaldo said. “We played better than Sevilla. I scored two goals and I’m coming back from my injury so it’s a perfect night so I feel very pleased for that. My team-mates helped me a lot to score the goals so it was a fantastic night.”
Ronaldo received the Man-of- the-Match from Sir Alex Fergusson and he said he is grateful to his ex-boss. “I’m happy and very grateful that it was Sir Alex who presented me with my award”.
Sir Alex Fergusson, who gave the man-of-the-match award to Ronaldo, also praised the efforts of Portuguese star, saying: “Usually it is difficult to pick one player when there are so many good ones on the pitch but Cristiano made it easy for me tonight.”
