Struggling Liverpool face Burnley this Boxing Day. The Reds go into this game at the back of a hard fought, albeit deserved draw against Arsenal. The Merseysiders are without a doubt, struggling at the moment and need to assemble wins over the festive period if they want to keep up Top 4 hopes.

Brad Jones has been preferred as the goalkeeper ahead of Simon Mignolet of late, and is expected to retain his place in goal for the game against the Clarets.

“Brad over his career here has been No.3 or No.2 goalkeeper, and when he’s been called upon he’s come in and done very well,” Rodgers said in his pre-match conference.

“He’s a very loyal goalkeeper who loves working here at the club, and when he’s asked to fill in, he fulfils that duty very well. He’s an important member of our squad.

Because of the bad situation with goalkeepers at Liverpool right now and the lack of choice Rodgers has at the moment, there has been immense speculation linking goalkeeper after goalkeeper with a move to Merseyside. One of the consistent links has been Petr Cech, Chelsea’s current number two. The Reds boss has said that Mignolet will continue in goal after his return and he is confident he will come back a better keeper, but he has refused to rule out winter business.

“If there is a possibility that we can strengthen in January, we will look at that,” Rodgers added.

“There will always be speculation, but I won’t comment on any players.”

“In terms of Simon, his response has been fantastic. His training has been really good, we’re analysing the parts of his game where we think he can improve. And like I said, sometimes coming out of the team can give you that reflective period that you don’t have when you’re in the thick of it. It can benefit you. Hopefully when he returns, he will have gained from that time out and can become a better keeper for it.

“I will make my mind up on that (Mignolet’s return) at the right time. At this moment in time Simon is working hard to get back into the team. I haven’t lost any belief in him, he’s still an outstanding goalkeeper, and I am sure when the time comes, he will be better for it.”
