Arsenal FC manager Arsene Wenger has insisted that there are no regrets in missing out on Liverpool FC striker Luis Suarez in the summer.
Luis Suarez has undoubtedly been the player of the season so far in the Premier League and among the top three in the world this season. The Uruguayan has taken the league by storm since returning from his suspension and has already amassed 23 goals and 4 assists in 19 league appearances this season. He has almost single handedly led Liverpool’s charge for a top four finish this season and Arsenal will have to find a way to keep him quiet, like they did in the reverse fixture earlier this season, in order to win at Anfield. Here is a look at other key battles in this highly anticipated fixture.
Suarez was of course involved in long transfer saga earlier this summer with Arsenal launching a much talked about bid for the Liverpool striker, which was turned down. Wenger, who was desperate to add more quality upfront at the start of this season, believed Suarez could take his side to the next level, but they ended up signing Mesut Ozil after missing out on him. But Wenger insists that there are no regrets in missing out on the 27-year-old and also stressed on how pleased he is with Olivier Giroud’s performances this season. The Frenchman also stated that Arsenal’s interest in Suarez was not to replace Giroud in the side.
“No [I have no regrets]. You sometimes have regrets when a player played for you, and scores goals or does well somewhere else. He was never our player, it is just a situation that did not come off and that is it.
“But it was not to replace Olivier Giroud. We never wanted to replace Giroud, we always had complete confidence in him. I said at the beginning of the season that he always does better in the second year everywhere and he shows that again this season.
“He is a very important player for us and I am not surprised at all he is doing well.” – The Arsenal manager said ahead of the game.
Wenger has also ruled another move for Suarez in the future.
“At the moment no, no.” – He claimned.
Meanwhile Suarez has stressed on the importance a positive result against the Gunners in this game. He also believes that the league will go down the wire this season.
“Arsenal are the leaders in the table and victory would be good for morale, give the whole squad an enormous injection and reduce the points difference at the top.
“We didn’t have success at the Emirates, so our objective now is to win and I believe we have that chance.
“It’s rare that everything could be decided on the last day, but we must keep going and to ensure that happens we need results against the other main candidates.” – The Liverpool striker said.
