Radamel Falcao and Angel Di Maria could feature for Manchester United against Aston Villa as Van Gaal looks forward to his 7th consecutive win with the Red Devils.
Speaking before the game at Villa Park, Van Gaal revealed that Angel Di Maria has been training with the squad but is not assured of a place in the team squad against Aston Villa.
“Ángel Di María had trained this week with us so it’s always dependable how I have to compare with other players because he is not match fit after one week. What I have said about Robin van Persie or [Radamel] Falcao, I say it also for Di María – there’s no difference.”
“It’s a procedure and he must follow that procedure. Maybe I shall select him on the bench or maybe not. I have to make my decision because there is one training to go.”
Van Gaal also spoke about Radamel Falcao and reiterated that though the striker is fit, he is not sure to start the game on Saturday. The manager declined to comment on Falcao’s future at Manchester United, commenting that he has not been able to ‘see much’ of the striker due to his injuries.
“He didn’t play so much then you cannot see too much of a player and he didn’t train so much because he was a lot of time he has been injured, so first you have to be fit.”
“I have said that three weeks or a month ago, the first demand is fitness of a player. And okay, we wait for the fitness of a player. Now he shows fitness on the training sessions so maybe I shall select him, maybe for the bench or the line up.”
Falcao hasn’t started a game since October and is yet to make an impact after his high-profile transfer in the summer. The Colombian has suffered from a string of injuries and according to the rumours surrounding the striker, it is being reported that Manchester United might bail out of a permanent deal given his injury-prone nature. However Van Gaal is not likely to rush into taking any decision and will give Falcao plenty of opportunities to prove his worth at Manchester United. With a hectic schedule in front of him, United will be keen to make use of all their resources as they await a hectic Christmas weekend.
The striker had earlier asked for more game-time in a bid to prove his worth to Van Gaal. Falcao claimed that he wanted to stay at Manchester United but was not happy sitting on the bench under the Dutch maestro.
Marcos Rojo, Luke Shaw, Chris Smalling and Daley Blind remain unavailable for the game as United visit Aston Villa.
