Manchester United target Ilkay Gundogan has rejected a move to England, dealing a severe blow to David Moyes after signing a contract extension with Borussia Dortmund till 2016.
The German midfielder has long been linked with a move to Manchester United and was reportedly marked out by David Moyes as an important summer target. Reports suggesting that no agreement could be reached between the club and the player further strengthened rumours of a move to Manchester United with the midfielder himself suggesting that he was not sure regarding his future at Borussia Dortmund.
However Manchester United have been denied an opportunity to sign the midfielder after reports emerged that Ilkay Gundogan had signed a contract extension with the club till the year 2016. Out injured since August last year, Gundogan has barely featured in Dortmund’s campaign this season and the result shows in their performance in the German Bundesliga. An integral member of Klopp’s squad, Dortmund have successfully fed off rival suitors for Gundogan after having lost key members of the squad in successive years.
Having signed on till 2016, the player spoke to the club website and expressed his eagerness to get back to the football pitch and help his team-mates in the upcoming season.
“I am very grateful that my club gives me the opportunity to continue to be part of this special team and this very special environment.”
“I will do everything to be able to help my team-mates again soon and am very optimistic heading into the coming weeks and months.”
Though no date has yet been fixed on his return, the player will be hoping to make a recovery just in time for the Brazil World Cup. He is sure to not play any role in the remaining fixtures and will only return in the club colours next season.
Borussia Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc had earlier made it a priority to extend the contracts of his players to avoid an exodus in summer and the plan seems to be coming to fruition after having signed Gundogan for the next couple of years. He expressed his delight and believes that Gundogan will be able to reach his full potential at Dortmund.
“Against the backdrop of this special, injury-related situation we are very happy with this deal and hope that Ilkay will fulfil his full potential for Dortmund in the coming season.”
This means that David Moyes is back to square one and will have to look for fresh replacements to replace his ageing midfielders. The manager needs a central midfielder and Gundogan appeared to be just the right man for Manchester United. However, with the German out of bounds, David Moyes will have to train his eyes elsewhere as he prepares for a complete overhaul at Old Trafford.
