Liverpool is planning to make an audacious £25m move to bring Marcelo to the club from Real Madrid

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has apparently pointed to Real Madrid left-back Marcelo as the ideal man to put an end to the club’s woes in the position  and is going to make a high bid for him in the summer, according to reports.

The Reds have not really filled the left back spot since John Arne Riise made the position his own. Jose Enrique was brought in by Kenny Dalglish and has performed well in the previous two seasons. However, the Spaniard has been pretty much absent throughout this season with a leg injury. Valencia on-loan man Aly Cissokho has failed to prove why he was rated so highly and has not adjusted to life in Premier League. Academy graduate Jon Flanagan has been the player who has stepped up and has been one of the very pleasant surprises for the club this season.

Marcelo joined Real Madrid as an 18 year old player in 2007. He far he has 261 appearances for himself for Los Blancos and has scored 18 goals and chalked up 46 assists (according to The Brazilian international is a brilliant dribbler of the ball and along with all the fancy tricks he possesses, he retains the ball very well and it is very hard to dispossess him. He also possesses considerable attacking flair and can play upfront as a left midfielder or left wingback. He is a good crosser of the ball and links up well with attackers.

In 2011, when Marcelo was just 22 years old, Diego Mardona called him the best player in La Liga, after Ronaldo and Messi:

“Removing [Lionel] Messi and Cristiano [Ronaldo], Marcelo is the best player in the league right now”

Marcelo has regularly featured in Carlo Ancelotti’s side this season and has grabbed a goal and seven assists in 33 appearances in all competitions.

Liverpool would probably be competing in the Champions League next season and Brendan Rodgers knows that quality and depth in the squad will get them far. Liverpool might be competing in four competitions next season and Rodgers would need more players so that he can also shuffle his squad for different fixtures.

Brendan Rodgers has said in the past that Champions League football would be vital in attracting quality players next season. It looks like the Norther Irishman’s transfer wish-list is exactly like that. He has clearly not gone for an unknown rookie and instead is targeting a well-established world class player.

THT Verdict- Unlikely

Liverpool fans should be glad that their club is linked with such quality names. There have been reports of the club targeting quality and proven stars such as Isco, Roberto Firmino and Mateo Kovacic. However, the possibility of the 25 year old Marcelo heading to Merseyside looks very slim. Marcelo is currently part of one of the best sides in the world, one that is consistently been involved in the title race and Champions League final stages as well. There won’t be any particular up for him in a move to Liverpool, except if he is looking for a new challenge. Liverpool, however, should try their level best to get the Brazilian who is going to add a lot of stability in the stuttering, vulnerable and constantly shaky back-line.
