Real Madrid are willing to listen to offers for midfielder Xabi Alonso.
Reports suggest that La Liga giants Real Madrid are willing to listen to offers for midfield talisman Xabi Alonso. According to El Confidencial, Real are concerned by the Spain star’s lack of fitness and apparent weight loss during pre-season. Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti is reportedly worried by Alonso showing ‘little strength’ during training.
The Spanish midfielder had an uncovincing World Cup with the national side and spoke candidly about a lack of motivation by the team for the competition. Ever since the tournament, Alonso’s future with Los Blancos has been brought under scrutiny and now with reports in Spain suggesting that the Madrid player may be offloaded this season, it seems that his future with the club is numbered. The arrival of Toni Kroos had given hints that Alonso may not regularly be part of the first team next season as Luka Modric and Toni Kroos could form an effective midfield partnership for some years to come. Further reports claiming the Spanish giants are interested in Wolfsburg’s Brazilian midfielder Luis Gustavo also indicate that Alonso may be shipped off in this transfer window. The 32 year old is one of the La Liga side’s highest earners and the fact that Ancelotti doesn’t exactly need him next season, he would be more than willing to offload him without haggling with potential suitors.
Fresh reports claim that his former side Liverpool are going to make an offer for him soon. Alonso is still a fan favorite at Merseyside and is very fondly remembered. Rodgers’ side will only benefit with the addition of a proven world-class player like Alonso, especially since the Reds are rumored to be looking eager to offload Brazilian Lucas Leiva. Alonso will add some much needed experience to the relatively young Liverpool side. Rodgers also needs depth and quality in the squad as Liverpool make their return to the Champions League after five years.
These reports claim that the Merseyside club is ready to table an opening offer of around €10m (£7.9m) and see if Real are willing to sell the player for that sum and also know Alonso’s reaction to the club’s interest.
Alonso spent five very successful and happy seasons at Liverpool, helping Rafa Benitez’s side to a Champions League triumph in his first campaign. He made 210 appearances for the Premier League side before leaving for Real Madrid in a £30m move back in June 2009. The Spaniard has time and again stated his love and admiration for the club and a switch back to Merseyside will be a good one for all the parties involved.
