Iker Casillas has revealed that Real Madrid are determined to overtake FC Barcelona and lead the La Liga table before the start of winter break.

Real Madrid are just one point behind leaders FC Barcelona in La Liga and Casillas is now hoping that his club will overtake its eternal rivals before the start of the Christmas.

“Our aim is what we’ve wanted from the start of the season: we need to try and top the league by Christmas,” the Real Madrid captain told reporters on Thursday. “We took an important step in getting there by beating FC Barcelona.”

Real Madrid last won the La Liga in 2012 and Casillas believes that winning it back is going to be their top priority. “Everyone wants us to go one better than we did last year and that’s not so easy but with the team we’ve got, we are heading in the right direction. The results will determine the path we take, the direction we’re in right now is exactly the one we had hoped for at the start of the season. Our objective isn’t to think about what might or might not happen later, it’s about the day to day.”

Real Madrid are favorites to win the Champions League for record 11th time this year and Casillas believes that they are on a right track. “In the Champions League too we need to make sure we make the knockout stage and not forgetting that within a few weeks we have to play the Club World Cup – a tournament which we have the earned the right to contest and winning it would be the icing on the cake to end 2014”.

The Real Madrid captain said that his squad has enough strength to win all possible trophies and that they have to maintain consistency to achieve the success at the end of the season.

“Football changes from one day to the next; what seems incredible today might not appear so great the next day. We have to try to reach March in the best possible position and conditions because in April, all of the competitions will be decided and our idea is to be at 100 per cent when that happens. Right now we are doing what we set out to do at the start of the campaign. Everyone wants us to go one better than we did last year and that’s not so easy but with the team we’ve got, we are heading in the right direction”.

Real Madrid beat Atletico in injury time to lift the much awaited La Decima and speaking of those memories, Casillas said that: “I felt relieved because we had been aiming to win it for ages. Real Madrid had gone 12 years without lifting this club’s favourite trophy.”
