Real Madrid starlet Raphael Varane has revealed that he nearly joined Premier League giants Manchester United, before signing for Los Blancos, reports

The 21-year-old, dubbed as the best young defender in football, came close to joining the Red Devils, who along with Chelsea are currently reported to be interested in his services. At present, Varane would have been the perfect player to be in van Gaal’s squad as even though United are doing well at the moment, with six wins in six games, their defence is a major cause for worry. van Gaal’s side has been plagued with recurring injuries and their back four has been changing in every match. In hindsight then, for now, Varane would have been a great asset to the team to have currently.

“We were close to an agreement with Manchester United,” the French international said

“My mom speaks English and this facilitated the translation. There was also an interesting project [on offer] but I made a choice for my career. I think I can go higher and mark my generation. I would be happy to tell myself I did the maximum and went as far as I could during my career.”

His former boss at Real Madrid, Jose Mourinho, also revealed details of how the transfer facilitated. The Portuguese also happened to mention the interest of Manchester United in the talented defender.

“I was on vacation,” the Portuguese explained. “La Liga was over. I was in Madrid and Zinedine Zidane shows up with a DVD.

“I looked at the player and I was very happy with what I saw. Manchester United wanted him but Real Madrid was very strong in this deal.”

Varane recently signed a new contract with Los Blancos that would keep him at the Bernabeu until 2020. He has not featured as much for the La Liga biggies this season as the experience of Pepe and Sergio Ramos has been preferred by Ancelotti, but by no means is he surplus to requirements at Real. The Frenchman is very young and is going to be a key player for Los Blancos and Les Bleus in the coming years.
