Real Madrid have officially confirmed the signing of Costa Rican goalkeeper Keylor Navas from Levante on a six-year deal.
Keylor Navas turned out to be one of the star performers in the recently concluded World Cup as Costa Rica reached the quarter-finals. The 27-year-old was linked with a move to Real Madrid since then and the Spanish club has now confirmed his arrival on a 6-year contract. The transfer fee involved in this deal is believed to be £7.9m.
“Real Madrid C. F. and Levante U. D. have reached an agreement for the transfer of Keylor Navas, who has signed to the club for the next six seasons.
“The player will be presented on Tuesday 5 August at 13:00, in the president’s box in the Santiago Bernabéu stadium, after undergoing the corresponding medical.
“Subsequently, Keylor Navas will step out onto the turf in the Santiago Bernabéu for the first time in a Real Madrid shirt and will speak to the press in the press room.” – Read an official statement released by Real Madrid on their website.
Navas joined Levante in 2012 and he established himself as one of the best goalkeepers in Spain last season as kept 17 clean sheets in 37 appearances. But his rise to stardom was completed in the World Cup as he pulled out some fantastic performances to help Costa Rica reach the quarter-finals of the World Cup for the first time.
Navas made 21 saves in 5 appearances in the tournament as Costa Rica surprising progressed through to the group to death. But his best arrived at the knock-out stage when he almost single-handedly kept out Greece, as Costa Rica won on penalties. In the quarter-final, he pulled out another world class performance as Netherlands failed to score past him and needed penalties in the end to win the game.
The former Albacete goalkeeper’s arrival will fuel further speculation about the future of Diego Lopez at the club. The Spaniard has been Real Madrid’s number goalkeeper, at least in the league, for the past two seasons, but has been linked with a move away from Bernabeu this summer. Napoli are reportedly interested in signing him, with Navas set to replace him in the starting line-up.
