Real Madrid were convincingly beaten by Atletico Madrid in front of their home crowd and boss Carlo Ancelotti feels that the players did not show the strength to overcome the testing situation.
“We need to analyse the second half performance, and try and sort it out. We had a good first half, like in Anoeta, but the second half wasn’t good.” Ancelotti was speaking in a press conference after the defeat.
Atletico Madrid brought in Arda Turan as substitute in the second half and that move paid off immediately as the Turkey international scored a brilliant winning goal. Real Madrid players lacked the intensity and Ancelotti claimed that small mistakes caused them a game.
“We’re paying for small mistakes we make, that’s football and it’s normal. At times things don’t go well and you pay for small mistakes. Atlético had one chance from a corner and one more and we paid for them. We need to react quickly because we have another big game on Tuesday.”
This was Real Madrid’s second successive has raised many questions over the suitability of new acquisitions Toni Kroos and James Rodriguez to the playing style of the club but Ancelotti said that there is no problem with the system.
“We don’t have a problem with the system, we need to get a few players used to this system, but we know it, the problem was the intensity and the attitude in the second half, like in Anoeta. It’s not a problem with the system.
“I’ve a lot of experience with this, at Milan I had Pirlo as an attacking midfielder. Here Di María and Modric have been. I look for balance with quality players, that’s what makes the difference.”
However, the Real Madrid boss said that he is worried after the poor start to the season. Ancelotti said: “I’m worried because this isn’t a good start to the season. Fortunately it’s only the start, last year we had the same problem and I’m sure that with work and self-criticism we can sort it.”
Real Madrid skipper Iker Casillas was whistled by the Santiago Bernebau faithful but Ancelotti said that he is not aware of this. “I didn’t hear whistling, I don’t know if he was whistled, I’m focused on the game, thinking about tactics, not what’s happening in the stands.”
Meanwhile Real Madrid skipper said that he is very upset with the defeat and he is hurt. Casillas, referring to the whistling of the crowd, also said that he has to accept the anger of the fans as the team didn’t perform well.
“It hurts us just as much as it hurts the fans. We didn’t deliver”, Casillas said. “The crowd call the shots and if they choose to whistle me, I have to find a way to deal with it. I have to keep working hard and respond the way I know best, which is by playing football.”
