Real Madrid clinched a narrow 1-0 win against Basel in an away game today and Carlo Ancelotti has said that the Swiss side is better than struggling Liverpool.
Cristiano Ronaldo equaled the record of Raul with his 71st goal in the Europe’s elite football competition and Real Madrid officially secured a top spot in their group with a victory over Basel.
Real Madrid have won all 5 of their group games so far. And speaking after the game, coach Carlo Ancelotti said that Paulo Sousa’s FC Basel are in better shape than Liverpool and feels that the Swiss side have a better chance of progressing into the knockout stages of Champions League.
Ancelotti said: “I think Basel are currently better than Liverpool. They are in good shape physically and they’re well organized. Anfield isn’t an easy ground for any team to visit but I think Basel have a slight advantage”.
This was a 15th consecutive win for Real Madrid and when asked about the current form of the team, Ancelotti said that he expects his players to maintain the same tempo.
Ancelotti said: “We’re leaders of the group and the team is doing well, fantastic. The players deserve the praise they’re getting for what they are doing”.
“It’s a good run but the season is very long and now we have start thinking about our next game. We have to think about improving this run we have strung together. Anything we do that can put us into the club’s history books is a good thing. A large part of the merit is down to the players who are having a fantastic season”.
However, Real Madrid had to struggle to dominate the game against Basel and Ancelotti was not fully satisfied with the performance of his players.
“We didn’t play to our usual level; we were slower than we normally are. But after getting a goal we controlled the game by defending hard – with sacrifice and concentration. Thanks to that we were able to win which is the most important thing”.
Meanwhile, Cristiano Ronaldo has now equaled the record of Raul Gonzalez’s 71 Champions League goals but Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema dismissed the reports that the CR7 is obsessed with records.
Speaking after a victory against Basel, Benzema said that: “Ronaldo doesn’t ask me to pass him the ball in order for him to break the record. Frankly, he doesn’t ask for anything. But when he’s well positioned on the pitch, I offer him the ball.”
