Real Madrid continued their good run of form with 20th consecutive victory over Almeria on match day 15 of La Liga but captain Iker Casillas said after the game that his side was lucky to secure all three points.

In-form midfielder Isco put Real Madrid ahead with a brilliant curling effort before an equaliser from Verza on 39 minutes. But Gareth Bale was quick to restore the lead of Los Blancos as he scored through the header as Real Madrid went into the lead before half-time.

Marcelo fouled Almeria’s Edgar in the Real Madrid penalty area in 61st minute but captain Casillas put in a nice effort to save the penalty. Cristiano Ronaldo joined the party in the later stages of the game by scoring twice late on to seal the win.

Speaking at a press conference after the game, Casillas said that Almeria made Real Madrid work hard to earn the win. Casillas said: “At 1-2 if we’d conceded a goal the game would’ve been different, but we reacted after that. I don’t know whether in general it was our most uncomfortable game so far. Maybe.

“But today we said at half-time that we weren’t at our best; maybe we were a wee bit fortunate. During games like this you just have to push on. The penalty save was in a key moment and the game would probably have been different. We reacted and at the end not only Cristiano but our defenders responded as well.”

Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti said after the game that he is happy with the efforts of his players. “Almería fought a lot and we had problems, but quality came through in the end. In any case, it was a tough game.”

“They fought and pressed a lot, and we missed a few of our passes and weren’t relaxed in possession.”

Victory over Almeria means Real Madrid are 5 points clear of FC Barcelona at the top of the La Liga table and Carlo Ancelotti’s players will now head to Morocco to contest in the Club World Cup. Coach Carlo Ancelotti said that he will not expect anything but the championship from his players.

“Only winning it will be enough, like in any competition. But the atmosphere and timing are both good.”
