The Argentine signs a 16 million euro per season deal with Barcelona

Lionel Messi extended his contract with Barcelona till 2019, by signing a five year contract on Friday.

This news has rejuvenated the team and its supporters as they head on against Atletico Madrid, a game which is considered as a virtual La Liga final.

The official website of Barcelona published the news of the new contract deal, however the club remained mum on the price that they will pay for the new contract.

“Barcelona has reached an agreement to adjust the terms in the contract binding Leo Messi to the club as a professional first team player, The revised and updated contract will be signed over the next few days.” the website stated.

Barcelona-based newspaper Sport claimed that Messi has been given a record breaking 16 million Euro per season contract by Barcelona. If true, Messi has surpassed Cristiano Ronaldo as the best-paid player on planet.

Although there are various rumours hovering around, as to what price has been agreed upon by both the parties to sign the contract, one thing is confirm that Messi is going nowhere from Barcelona, at least until 2019.

There were many speculations about Messi’s reluctance to sign a new contract with the Catalans. Many believed that he was unhappy at Barcelona and wanted to move out, but all those news have been squashed now.

The 26 year old striker, has scored 354 goals for the Catalans, most by any players for them. He has been instrumental in the team’s success in the recent past. With his staying at Barcelona will only boost the team’s confidence.

This signing is significant for Barcelona in more than one way. The Catalans were given a one year ban for violating the rules for signings of minor, this year. The club appealed against that decision and the decision has been suspended now. but they won’t be able to make any new transfer till july 1, and they want to make sure that they consolidate their squad until then.

Barcelona coach Gerardo Martino was pleased with the news of this contract.

“It should give peace to him and especially to the club, who can continue to count on the best player in the world” He said.

The game against Atletico Madrid will be the last game of  legendary defender Carlos Puyol and goalkeeper Victor Valdes for the club. and Barcelona who have not manage to perform in sync with their reputation until now, will look to win the La Liga title.
