Lionel Messi says he is not in competition with Cristiano Ronaldo, explaining that he only wants to play for FC Barcelona, where he is perfectly happy.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi has claimed last Ballon d’Or between them but the Argentine claims that he is not in competition with the Real Madrid star. The FC Barcelona striker also said that individual awards does not motivate him and only team achievements are important for him.

“As I have said many times, I am not in competition with Cristiano Ronaldo. I play my game and do my job. I am not interested in competing with him or anyone else; individual awards are the ones that matter least to me,” Messi said. He was speaking at an event organised by Gillette.

Messi have formed an excellent partnership with Neymar at FC Barcelona and he said that the Brazilian has the ability to become worlds’ best. “I don’t know when he’ll win the Ballon d’Or but with his skill and his circumstances one day he will. As for our partnership, we are playing closer together this season than last. He is a great player and it’s a privilege to share the pitch with him. I have a very good relationship with Neymar, he’s a great kid. We get on well on and off the pitch.”

FC Barcelona has appointed Luis Enrique as their new coach this year and Messi says that although his working style is different from Tata Martino, comparison of the two is not necessary. “Every coach has their own way of working. Luis Enrique does things his way and we try to follow his instructions to win titles, which is what it’s all about. It makes no sense to make comparisons between one and the other.”

New Barcelona boss Luis Enrique has used Messi behind the two strikers this season and the Argentine said that he is happy with his new role. “When you’re playing with a striker in the middle there are more chances to assist goals. That’s the way games go, it’s nothing more than that.

“I have a lot of freedom of movement on the pitch, the manager told me to do that, and I have two points of reference in front of me. I’m play more freely, creating more moves. Other years I have given assists, the thing is this year they have added up in two games. There’s nothing strange about it.”
