Lionel Messi beat Cristiano Ronaoldo to equal the Champions League goal scoring record of Raul and FC Barcelona coach Luis Enrique labeled Argentina international the best player he has ever seen after watching him score twice in their 2-0 win over Ajax.

FC Barcelona secured their place for the knockout stages of the Champions League by beating Ajax at Amsterdam ArenA and Messi was again their best performer as he scored both the goals. Messi had 69 goals to his name prior to this game while Cristiano Ronaldo had 70. But Ronaldo had failed to score against Liverpool on Wednesday and Messi took this opportunity to beat the Real Madrid star as he bagged the brace against Dutch champions.

FC Barcelona are still second in their Group F of Champions League but their place for the knockout places is secured and coach Luis Enrique was full of praise for Lionel Messi after the game.

“Messi is without doubt the best player I’ve seen as a player and a coach,” Luis said in his post-match press conference.

“I’m happy for the side in general. There were parts of the game we could improve, but in general we had a marvelous attitude, and I’m happy. We have to improve and for this I have a spectacular side. We started the season knowing there would be all sorts of moments. I liked everything in general.”

The FC Barcelona boss was also very pleased with the way his side made a return to winning ways after two consecutive defeats. Luis Enrique said: “After two successive defeats we are not injured, we just have a few wounds, which is normal over the course of a season. We will have all different kinds of moments.”

Meanwhile, FC Barcelona legend Xavi was also full of praise for Lionel Messi. Xavi said: “I’m happy for Leo Messi and the work he does in the team. He’s the number one, the best.”

The midfield maestro also said that he is happy with the performance of FC Barcelona. “Messi has freedom on the pitch, as do all three attackers, but here we have to work together and when we do everything works. We needed the victory. We have suffered playing far away from home but it’s a good win and it will give us confidence,” Xavi added.

“If you lose a match you don’t have to change the style. When we lose we have to keep going. The style with Luis Enrique is the same as it was at the beginning of the season.”

The next target of FC Barcelona is to secure a first place and to go as group winners in the next round.
