Wayne Rooney insists that Manchester United’s new signing Falcao will “get us back to where we belong – back winning titles again”.
Manchester United splashed more than 160 million euros on new arrivals like Angel Di Maria, Daley Blind, Ander Herrera, Luke Shaw and Radamel Falcao. And club captain Wayne Rooney is optimistic about the chances of winning the English Premier League title again.
“He’s a world-class player,” Rooney said of Falcao. “It’s down to Louis van Gaal how he chooses to play. He’s got myself, Falcao, Van Persie, Di María, Mata… So it’s a great selection of players for him [Louis van Gaal] to pick from. It’s a great statement of intent from the club and I am looking forward to working with him. But the time is now right to get these top players to get us back to where we belong – back to winning titles.” Rooney was speaking in a press conference ahead of today’s EPL game against QPR.
Manchester United signed Falcao on the deadline day on a one-year loan deal from Monaco for a fee of £4.8 million with an option to then sign the 28-year-old for a further four years for £43 million. And Rooney is aware about the playing style of Falcao as has watched the videos of the Colombia international on YouTube. “I’ve seen him play throughout the years and he’s a fantastic player. It’s exciting, and also for the Premier League as well, for him to come over. He could have gone to a number of other clubs but it’s great he’s come over and we’ve got him.”
Wayne Rooney, who famously pushed for a move to neighbors Manchester City in 2010, accusing Manchester United of not having enough ambition, claimed today that the Old Trafford club always had the ability to spend big in the transfer market.
“We always could do but it was a case of who the manager at the time wanted to bring in. Obviously last season, we know we were not good enough. But the time is now right to get these top players to get us back to where we belong – back to winning titles. It’s exciting times, it’s interesting times for United. We’ve not got off to the best start but we are confident.”
Meanwhile, Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal now faces the tricky question of team selection and reportedly, Juan Mata is expected to be dropped from the starting XI of the Dutchman. Reports coming from England have claimed that Van Gaal has asked the Manchester United management to off load Mata in January and make a move for BVB defender Hummels.
