According to recent reports, Wayne Rooney is concerned with the fact that Van Gaal might be appointed as Manchester United’s new manager given the Dutch’s relationship with Robin Van Persie.
Having been frozen out by Sir Alex Ferguson, Wayne Rooney emerged as Manchetser United’s go-to-player during David Moyes’ era at Old Trafford. He even bagged a lucrative contract and was supposed to be appointed the next captain after Vidic’s departure.
However with reports suggesting that Van Gaal is due to be the new manager at Old Trafford, Wayne Rooney once again stands the risk of losing favour with the Reds as Van Gaal is obviously closer to Dutch international Robin Van Persie. If he does take over the reins at Old Trafford, Van Persie will be the obvious first-choice striker and Wayne Rooney might have to revert to his old No 10 position. The striker might even be forced out of that position by Juan Mata who has been in fine form for the Reds and is likely to play right behind the striker.
Hence Wayne Rooney is reportedly quite concerned with the recent developments knowing that he will lose favour at Manchester United if Van Gaal does take over at Manchester United. Robin Van Persie shares a brilliant relationship with the Dutch manager, who is also leading the country in the World Cup. To make matters worse for Rooney, Robin Van Persie has been appointed as the Dutch captain which means that he might as well be out of contention for wearing the prestigious Captain’s armband at Old Trafford.
Manchester United is surely going to try and lure some of the World’s best talents this summer and the club has been linked with a move for Edison Cavani and Marco Reus. This means that with the presence of Juan Mata already in the side, Wayne Rooney, who was supposed to lead United’s charge next season, might find himself spending time on the bench at the start of the next season.
The striker faced a similar situation in Sir Alex Ferguson’s final season at Manchester United when he was relegated to playing second choice to Van Persie. The Englishman was on the sidelines as Robin Van Persie fired United to a historic domestic win and was very close to leaving Old Trafford with Chelsea lurking around for the striker.
However he was reportedly convinced to stay by David Moyes who seemed to be wanting to build a team around Rooney who had been offered a mammoth 5 and a half year contract with the Reds. But with David Moyes’ unceremonious exit this month, there is a big question mark hanging over a lot of players at Manchester United, including Wayne Rooney’s. As the season draws to a close, it all now depends on David Moyes’ permanent successor at Old Trafford.
