Manchester United target Kevin Strootman admits his desire to play for Real Madrid or Barcelona in future.

Kevin Strootman has been linked with a move to Manchester United for a long time. It is expected that Louis Van Gaal will approach AS Roma to sign the midfielder in the January transfer window.

Kevin Strootman recently hinted that he may look for a move away from Roma in order to fulfill his ambitions of getting to the ‘absolute top’. However, the Dutch midfielder might not be interested in a move to the Old Trafford as he expressed his desire of making a switch to either Real Madrid or Barcelona.

“I absolutely do not see Roma as just an intermediate step in my career,” Strootman is quoted as telling Voetbal International magazine. “But I do think a player who performs well here will get to the absolute top quicker.”

He added: “Of course everybody wants to play for Barcelona or Real Madrid, but they don’t come looking for you so quickly in the Eredivisie.

“There are odd exceptions, but in general their scouts tend to look around at higher levels.”

Strootman joined Roma from PSV in 2013 for a fee believed to be in the region of €17 million. His move to the Serie A proved to be a huge success as the defensive midfielder managed to score 5 league goals in 25 games last season providing 6 assists.

Strootman is a strong defensive midfielder with great vision and balance. The physical and tactically strong midfielder plays his best football as a box-to-box midfielder. He has often drawn comparisons with former Manchester United player Roy Keane due to the similar style of play.

The 24-year old has just returned to action for Roma after spending eight months on the sidelines with torn knee ligaments. He started the game against Sassuolo which ended in a 2-2 draw and made an appearance from the bench against Torino.

Though Strootman has expressed interest in joining Spanish giants, Real Madrid or Barcelona, it remains to be seen whether the La Liga teams are keen on signing the Dutchman. Manchester United can still be the favourable destination in Strootman’s eyes as he will get the chance to display his talents to a wider audience. The 24-year old might be eyeing at Manchester United as the roadway to either Real Madrid or Barcelona considering the fact that Real Madrid have a history of purchasing talented and successful Manchester United players.
