Long term Manchester United target is focused and committed to Spanish side Athetico Bilbao and is not looking for a move away from the side, revealed his agent.

Herrera has been a serious target for Manchester United for a while and was involved in a very strange transfer saga last summer. United reluctantly agreed a  €36 million required to bring in the midfielder and the club even had a squad number assigned for the player and personal terms agreed. The player was also keen on the move having agreed to take a pay-cut.

However,  it was later reported that a series of technical issues because of Spanish tax laws, left the English champions in an awkward position and they were later unable to re-negotiate. Because of the delay in the eventual agreement, the 20 time league champions missed out because by a figure of around €6 million. Finally, United claimed they were not interested in the player and that the men photographed at the Liga de Futbol Profesional offices in Madrid were impostors.

Reports started doing rounds in the winter transfer window last season, that United will look to bring in the player in the window or in the next one. And true to them, the Manchester club have been linked with the player. Reports in Spain suggest that Louis Van Gaal has instructed executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward to launch a £25m bid for the Spanish midfielder. The offer is a little peculiar because Herrera’s current contract contains a £30m release clause, which will reportedly increase to £35m at the end of this month.

The midfielder has also been a target of Manchester United’s Premier League’s rivals Chelsea as Jose Mourinho is keen on bringing the 24 year old to Stamford Bridge in a bid to land some silverware after being trophy-less in his first season with Chelsea in his second spell in charge with the London club.

His agent has now spoken and cleared the air around his client’s future. Arturo Canales told AS that he was unaware of any interest from any Premier League side.

“There has been nothing new,” Canales said.

“There were rumours during the whole year, saying that United would try and sign him this summer, and even that [Jose] Mourinho wanted him for Chelsea, but we have not heard anything.”

“The player is focused on Athletic and nothing else. Ander is on holidays and he is only thinking about the coming season with Athletic, because he is very excited about playing the Champions League with his team.”

Reportedly, Athletico are not too bothered with the lingering interest of the Red Devils as they are confident Herrera will be staying with them. Athletic Bilbao are building for their next season where they will be playing the Europe’s elite competition. They have already confirmed the signing of last season’s Segunda Division top scorer Borja Viguera from Alaves. The club wants to keep their star players and would make sure they keep United away from their 24 year prized asset. However, they are concerned with Iker Muniain’s situation as the 21 year old dubbed as the ‘Spanish Messi’ has only one year left on his contract and is attracting interest from a lot of top clubs.
