A new era begins at Old Trafford this summer. A brand new shirt and a new Dutch manager later, Manchester United look equipped to start the new season with cautious optimism. Decorated with the Order of Orange-Nassau, 63-year old Louis van Gaal has been hired to steer Manchester United out of the mire they found themselves stuck in last season. And the signs so far have been positive. United had an excellent pre-season, winning games against Roma, Real Madrid, Inter Milan, Liverpool and Valencia. There is a new formation, a new system in place, a new philosophy and a new regimen.

Known to be a hard disciplinarian, Van Gaal has instituted changes already. Lunch has to be had with team-mates at round tables instead of the regular rectangle, to encourage interaction between players. A new style of play has been embraced by the squad and a refreshing air of directness has been blowing at Carrington. Van Gaal is known to be as blunt in his criticism as he is quick in his appreciation. There is finally a sense of leadership at management after the fiasco that was the David Moyes reign. Here is a look at what to expect from United in the 2014-15 Premier League season.

Squad Analysis

Goalkeepers:

David de Gea was one of the few bright spots from a disastrous last season. The winner of Match of the Dayai??i??s Save of the Season for this point blank save from Luis Suarez, De Gea has been called the ai???best goalkeeper we haveai??? by Van Gaal, something all of us were already aware of. What this highlights however, is that De Gea remains the favourite to be between the sticks under the Van Gaal regime.

Even though Sam Johnstone was given a run-out in pre-season, De Gea is the best equipped to play in the new 3-4-1-2 system. The new formation requires United to build play up from the back and use the goalkeeper when pressured by opposing forwards. Much like Barcelonaai??i??s defence, the centre backs are expected to spread out to the wings and rely on the goalkeeperai??i??s footwork to play the ball out from the back.

De Geaai??i??s confidence, calmness and composure on the ball is vital for this system to succeed and any doubts on his ability should be dismissed with a wave of the hand, based on this little number he pulled against Fulham two seasons ago. The time is right for De Gea to prove himself as the best goalkeeper in the Premier League. It also looks like Anders Lindegaard will get a few games in the Premier League, while Ben Amos and Johnstone might get a run-out in the cup games.

Defenders:

An aching gap needed to be addressed before the season started. The departures of club captain Nemanja Vidic, the most expensive defender in the Premier League till about a week ago Rio Ferdinand and the vastly experienced, albeit error-prone Patrice Evra called for a defensive overhaul. However, after a successful pre-season, Van Gaal must be sitting with knitted brows, contemplating whether he can trust a back three of Jonny Evans, Phil Jones and Chris Smalling to take centre stage at centre back.

Academy players Tyler Blackett, Michael Keane and Reece James have caught Van Gaalai??i??s eye, and going by his reputation of rearing youth team players and bringing them into the first team, the trio must be rubbing their hands in glee. Although Van Gaal is famous for blooding the likes of Xavi, Puyol, Andres Iniesta at Barcelona and Thomas Mueller, Toni Kroos and David Alaba at Bayern Munich, it is unlikely he will trust the youth players in a season where United must finish in the top four, not just for the fans, but also for the sponsors.

Chelsea

Luke Shaw must step up to match Van Gaal’s expectations

Luke Shaw, who was bought from Southampton before Van Gaalai??i??s arrival has been sensationally declared unfit to play on the left wing of the 3-4-1-2, by the gaffer. Shaw, apparently, is not fit enough to run up and down the wing and deliver the work-ethic that Van Gaalai??i??s system demands. There are rumours of Marcos Rojo, the Argentine left back, to be bought from Sporing Lisbon. Indeed, the left back who excelled at the World Cup has refused to train with Lisbon in order to push through a move to Old Trafford.

Van Gaalai??i??s confidence in the current defenders notwithstanding, United must buy at least one ball-playing centre back. Fortunately for the fans, they backed out of a bidding war with Barcelona for Thomas Vermaelen, a talented, but inconsistent and error-prone defender. Van Gaal should wonder if Vermaelen was a significant improvement over the likes of Jonny Evans and Phil Jones, which is debatable. With Mangala off to Manchester City, United must now focus on that one ball-playing centre back that would complete this jigsaw. Mehdi Benatia or Mats Hummels, anyone?

Midfielders:

The one department that has always been thought of as Unitedai??i??s Achilles heel, the central midfield does not look any more secure than usual, even with the arrival of the exciting Ander Herrera. The Spanish midfielder has a good eye for passing, demonstrating some mouth-watering perfectly weighted passes during pre-season. Coupled with Darren Fletcher in midfield, Herrera looked confident and tenacious, but doubts still remain whether United have the muscle in midfield to complement Herreraai??i??s guile.

Man-mountain Marouane Fellaini is awkward at best in midfield and has proven consistently what a waste of money he was. Van Gaal is very likely to dispose him off, which leaves a central midfield devoid of a genuine tackler of the ball. Decade-long howls from United fans to finally bring in a player in the Roy Keane mould might subside if United pull off signing Arturo Vidal, the Chilean midfield dynamo, unsettled at Juventus.

The wing is the trickiest position at United this summer. Ideally United want an attacking full back, capable of going past defenders, willing to track back and able to get into attacking positions, cross the ball and even have that rare decent pop at goal. None of the wingers at United satisfy all of these criteria, which is a worry for Van Gaal. There is no Daley Blind-like presence on the wings, although Luke Shaw comes close. Shaw should probably be a shoe-in for the left wing position, once he achieves the fitness levels Van Gaal demands.

Ashley Young has been surprisingly good in pre-season

Ashley Young has been surprisingly good in pre-season

Antonio Valencia has the necessary work-ethic, drive, consistency and reliability needed, much like Janmaat from Van Gaalai??i??s Dutch side at the World Cup. Valencia should be perfect for the right wing, although Van Gaal doesnai??i??t seem to be gaga over the Ecuadorian. This means Rafael might get a look in, if he improves on his discipline and maturity as a player. An unexpected surprise in this competition though, is Van Gaalai??i??s keen interest in Ashley Young in the wing-back/winger role. Young did perform surprisingly well in pre-season and not many would disagree with Van Gaalai??i??s decision should Young start against Swansea this weekend.

Filling the number 10 position is not as straightforward as one might think. Even though Juan Mata is the favourite to take up that role, and rightly so, Van Gaal has options that could make him think long and hard. Shinji Kagawa is known to have performed brilliantly at Borussia Dortmund in a similar role, while Adnan Januzaj has shown his immense ability as a number 10 last season. Mata, however, is the best bet out of these three. The two time Chelsea player of the season as voted by the Stamford Bridge fan, has fitted as a playmaker into Van Gaalai??i??s system like a fish to water, as evidenced by his pre-season performances.

Forwards:

Possibly for the first time since his transfer from Arsenal, Robin van Persie is going to play regularly with Wayne Rooney in a fearful front two. Van Gaalai??i??s captain from the Dutch team should find his mojo back after an ordinary, injury-plagued season under David Moyesai??i??s reign. His current captain, Rooney, finally gets to play up-front like he has wanted for a couple of years now. The two should, at least theoretically partner each other well, although we have not been able to see this pairing in pre-season due to Van Persieai??i??s absence.

Danny Welbeck will continue to be shunted between left wing and the forward position, when either of Van Persie and Rooney are unavailable. Javier Hernandez looks likely to continue in a back-up role and the Mexican might want a move away if first team football is what he desires. Van Gaal would however, like to keep Chicharito as an impact sub, the forward notoriously famous for grabbing late winners, rightly taking the ai???super-subai??i?? moniker.

Tactical Analysis

The 3-4-1-2 is an interesting formation to analyse, especially in the Premier League. Playing 3 at the back has been tried experimentally of course in the Premier League, with little success or persistence. Ai??Wigan have tried it under Roberto Martinez, and Brendan Rodgers tinkered with this formation in his first season at Liverpool, but nobody has gotten in right.

united

Van Gaal has brought in this formation that succeeded with the Dutch team at the World Cup to Old Trafford and has arguably managed to get his players working well in this new system. It has been a learning curve for the players, but the results were showing in pre-season as the players pressed well when they lost possession, moved around the pitch with discipline and urgency, things lacking in the way they played under Moyes.

United start the attack from the back most often, with De Gea involved in the build up with two centre backs taking up wide positions as the sweeper moves up the field into a defensive midfield position. They rely a lot on long balls out to the opposite wing to catch the opposition off-guard. Herrera takes the ball often and sprays it to the wingers, who bomb on forward. Rooney characteristically drops deep to receive the ball, leaving spaces for Juan Mata to exploit.

Itai??i??s a formation that requires even more concentration defensively. During the pre-season friendly with Roma, Van Gaal during the beginning of the second half instructed Jonny Evans to rush out to tackle the ball off the attackers. Evans obliged almost immediately, rushing out to intercept a ball off the feet of the attacker. This is a characteristic of the new system, where pressing is key and rushing out from deep positions to defend a needed skill. Itai??i??s a risky move which requires perfect judgement to prevent the tackle from going horribly wrong.

The wingers need to bomb up and down the pitch, although not at the same time. One winger needs to stay back to cover for the sweeper who could get involved with passing by moving further up the pitch. Again, this requires a great deal of communication and discipline between the two wingers. This is without doubt a formation that requires fine balance and perfect synchronization and it remains to be seem how much Van Gaal is able to get out of his players in this new system.

Player to Watch: Ander Herrera

Ander Herrera: United have finally found their midfield star

Ander Herrera: United have finally found their midfield star

The Spaniard was targeted aggressively by David Moyes last season, but Van Gaal has now made him his first signing of the summer. Herrera has been exciting to watch in pre-season and United may have finally found the player to link the defence with the attack. Herrera has shown composure on the ball, excellent vision and impeccable range of passing. And itai??i??s not just the attack, Herrera contributes to defence as well, breaking up play and being tenacious when without the ball. With an able foil (like Vidal), Herrera could be given the licence to play key passes from his deep position in midfield. Definitely the player to watch out for in a United shirt, Herrera might be just what United have been looking for. Old Trafford must be praying for a successful debut season from the Spaniard.

Predictions:

Despite all the optimism around Old Trafford, this season might be too early for Manchester United to win the Premier League. However, Van Gaal should be able to do enough to secure a Champions League spot at Old Trafford. With no European football to distract them, United should finish third in the league, losing out to the strength in depth at Manchester City and Chelsea. They might even win a couple of cups while theyai??i??re at it.

Premier League position: Third

F.A. Cup: Winners

Capital One Cup: Quarter Finals
