Manchester United has planned a bid of £24m for Roma defender Mehdi Benatia to fend off the interest of Chelsea and Bayern Munich.
Manchester United lost their season opener against Swansea City yesterday and new boss Louis van Gaal has a plan to sign at least one world class defender and midfielder before the conclusion of summer transfer window.
Reports coming from England have confirmed the eagerness of Manchester United to sign Mehdi Benatia. Daily Express report claims that: “It is suggested that the Red Devils have slapped £24m on the table in the hope of persuading Roma to sell. Roma are thought to want closer to £30m – a figure that City reportedly offered two months ago – to part with Benatia but have admitted the Moroccan international could leave before the end of the transfer window.”
Roma defender Mehdi Benatia is a hot property in the transfer market as the likes of Manchester United, Chelsea, Manchester City and Bayern Munich are interested in his signature. However, the need of Manchester United for world class defender is more genuine than all other interested parties.
Reports coming from England and Italy had claimed yesterday that Roma director Walter Sabatini is in London to open the negotiations with the interested clubs and he had a meeting with the representatives of Chelsea over a possible transfer. However, Manchester United management have decided to outbid Chelsea as Benatia is the most high profile and talented defender currently available in the market.
Daily Express report claims that Louis Van Gaal is in desperate need of more central defenders for his new 3-5-2 formation after being forced to name Tyler Blackett to face Swansea in the Premier League opener.
But the Italian side AS Roma value Benatia at around £32 million and United will have to increase their offer substantially if they want to have any realistic chance of getting their man.
Manchester United’s premier league rivals Chelsea are also interested in the signature of Benatia. The sale of David Luiz to Paris Saint Germain earlier this summer mean Mourinho will have to depend on John Terry, Ivanovic and Gary Cahill in the new season. However, Chelsea are not willing to match the asking price of Roma for the defender.
Meanwhile, German chamions Bayern Munich are the latest entrants in the race to sign Benatia as Guardiola has lost Javi Martinez due to a long term knee injury and the Spaniard has already confirmed that he will be signing a cover for his injured player in this transfer window.
AS Roma are keen to sale their prized asset Benatia because the Italian club has already spent huge money on new arrivals and they have to sale Benatia in order to settle their books according to the rules of Uefa’s FFP.
