Manchester United’s record breaking signing Angel Di Maria has claimed that working under Louis van Gaal was a key reason behind his move to Old Trafford from Real Madrid.
Angel Di Maria was the key member of Real Madrid’s Champions League squad last year but the club refused to accept unreasonable wage demands of the Argentina international and he completed his move to Manchester United for a British record fee of £59.7 million.
Manchester United appointed Louis Van Gaal as their new manager earlier in the summer and Di Maria has acknowledged that the presence of the Dutchman was a key reason behind his decision.
“Van Gaal was really important for me in order to come here,” Di María said. He was speaking to Perform. “Van Gaal was one of the first [people] who spoke about bringing me here. The coach always has the last word about the players he wants. I am really grateful to him because, thanks [to] him, I am now playing for Manchester United.”
Angel Di Maria also claimed that he wanted a change in his life and his move to Manchester United will motivate him to play better in coming days.
“I keep trying to improve every day and for that reason I wanted to come here to Manchester United. I needed to change my life. I will try my best to play the right way. I will try my best every match and show my arrival at Old Trafford was worthy.”
Manchester United spent more than 145 million pounds on new signings like Radamel Falcao, Angel Di Maria, Ander Herrera and Daley Blind during the transfer window and the ex-Real Madrid star believes that their huge investment will help them grow this season.
“Manchester United are trying to grow,” Di Maria said. “We already know we didn’t start the Premier [League] in the right way [but] those things always happen in football.”
Manchester United also signed Argentina international Marcos Rojo this summer and Di Maria hopes that his compatriot will settle in quickly to life in the Premier League.
“Marcos Rojo [has] shown at the World Cup [that] he is capable. He did really well there and he deserved to come here. Hopefully he will be able to improve every day as he did at the World Cup and he will bring a lot of good things to Manchester United.”
