Former Manchester United star Phil Neville has said that the Red Devils must spend another 1oo million pounds if they want to become competitive again.

Manchester United spent more than 150 million pounds on new signings like Ángel di María, Luke Shaw, Ander Herrera, Marcos Rojo, Daley Blind and Radamel Falcao during the summer transfer window but new manager Louis van Gaal is still struggling for the right balance which was proved again in their 5-3 loss to Leicester City this weekend.

However, despite splashing such huge amount on new signings, Manchester United failed to sign any central defender and Phil Neville believes that this mistake will prove costly to the club. “I know United have spent £150m,” he told BBC Radio 5 live. “I think there’s another two transfer windows of similar amounts of money needed – maybe £100m – before they can even think about winning the title.

“There are still key positions in the team that need filling. I think the centre-back position is obviously the key area. Holding midfield or centre midfield needs addressing too. There were no world-class centre-backs out there [this summer]. I think that’s why in the next two transfer windows, United might still be looking for that world-class defender.”

Chris Smalling and Phil Jones are currently the regular starters for Luis van Gaal’s team and Neville believes that both are capable of doing great things for Manchester United. “I am certain Chris Smalling will come good and I have full faith in Phil Jones as well,” he said. “They’ve bought of a lot of foreign players, you don’t get rid of your English spine.”

Van Gaal Advices Rooney To Play In the Midfield

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal is not “satisfied” with Wayne Rooney “as a  striker” and he has asked the player to try play in the midfield instead. Van Gaal believes that Radamel Falcao is better in the position.

“Rooney can play in more positions, he’s a multifunctional player and I have tried him in a striker’s position. He’s played well but not spectacular and Falcao is a striker and I think he can do it better.”
