Manchester United were in the hunt for Southampton’s bright prospect Luke Shaw to replace their experienced left back Patrice Evra. The imminent departures of Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic and Ryan Giggs from the playing staff leaves them short on experience and the united think that decided to keep the French man for one more year to ease the club in transition period. A complete change in the back four could have been suicidal for Luis Van Gaal’s team and keeping 33-year-old Patrice Evra for one more season makes sense in more than one way.
Even though Patrice Evra’s performances came under scrutiny last year, France national team coach Didier Deschamps gave him the nod for FIFA World Cup at the expense of Manchester City’s Gael Clichy and AS Monaco’s Eric Abidal. 54 times capped France left back is still integral to the 1998 World Champions and he is expected to guide and nurture upcoming prospect Lucas Digne.
Manchester United are also planning a similar role for the veteran defender next season. Patrice Evra will have a key role in moulding the future of 18-year-old Southampton left back Luke Shaw, if he makes the switch to Old Trafford. The Englishman is a highly rated prospect and has proved his mettle at Southampton, but the weight of expectations at Manchester United will be different altogether and Patrice Evra is expected to ease him into first team duties.
Patrice Evra joined Manchester United from AS Monaco in 2006 and has played a key role in UEFA Champions League and English Premier League triumphs. He has played 379 games for the Red Devils and has also registered 10 goals during this period.
Patrice Evra was expected to make way for Luke Shaw in this transfer window, and it remains to be seen how his contract extension will affect Luke Shaw transfer. Reports has emerged that Luke Shaw is considering his options and is not in a hurry to sign for Manchester United after seeing the latest developments at Old Trafford. Premier League challengers Chelsea are also monitoring the situation of Luke Shaw as the uncertainty is growing on his future.
Alexander Buttner is the other left back at Manchester United and many believes that he is not ready to occupy the left back spot. There is a chance that the uncertainty surrounding the arrival of Luke Shaw has prompted Manchester United to give contract extension to Patrice Evra. Frenchman’s contract extension means that even if Luke Shaw arrives at Old Trafford, it will be at the expense of Alexander Buttner. Can Patrice Evra and Luke Shaw co-exist in Manchester United dressing room?
