Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has made fellow Dutchman, Kevin Strootman, his priority signing for the summer.
The 13/14 season was probably Manchester United’s most forgettable one and new manager Louis Van Gaal is adamant about making changes to the side and getting the club back to its old ways. The ex- Barcelona, Ajax and Bayern Munich coach does not even want to take little steps and initially just target Champions League qualifications but wants drastic improvements and has set his eyes on a debut title. He he told a Dutch TV channel “The aim is to bring them back to the No1 position as soon as possible, because that’s where they were under Sir Alex Ferguson. Spain saw me succeed in my first year and in Germany as well. In England, it must also be possible.”
The Manchester United management has reportedly given van Gaal a sum of £150m to rebuild the squad this summer. The manager is presently away with the national team as they prepare for the World Cup that is taking place in 10 days from today. However, the 62 year old has already given the names of the players he wants Manchester United to sign. The list includes long-term Liverpool target Yevhen Konoplyanka, Bayern Munich’s Bastian Schweinsteiger, Atletico Madrid’s Miranda, Borrusia Dortmund’s Mats Hummels among others. According to Spanish daily Sport, United and Liverpool also had both their bids rejected by Barcelona for Alexis Sanchez. Recent reports indicate that Van Gaal has made Roma’s Dutch midfielder Kevin Strootman, his priority signing for the summer.
Van Gaal has sanctioned a £25 million bid for the Serie A man, despite the 24 year old being injured presently. The injury has forced him to be left out of the 62 year old’s World Cup squad and could see him be on the sidelines till October. However, this hasn’t deterred the new United manager and he has asked the Red Devils’ management to act upon this deal quickly and bring Strootman to Old Trafford.
Roma will obviously fight hard to keep their talismanic midfielder, who enjoyed his best spell, until the unfortunate recent injury. Rudi Garcia is determined to keep most of the players who helped Roma finish second last season, as the club’s manager wants to sustain that effort and make a title challenge this season. He said, “This group is fantastic. We hope to keep almost all of them and improve the team. We have already started to build for the future.”
The central midfielder made 29 appearances for Roma and scored 6 goals along with grabbing six assists. He only joined the Serie A club last summer as he arrived from from PSV Eindhoven in a transfer worth around £16 million. But the Italian club would probably have their work cut out as Strootman might be wanting to unite with his national coach at the Manchester club and van Gaal carries a reputation of being very effectively persuasive. United are reportedly also in a good position for the potential transfer of Dortmund defender Mats Hummels.
